Dec. 12 - Morning Prayer I don't know about you, but I feel as though the world has been in a state of prolonged Advent for many weeks or months at this point i...n time. We are all waiting - waiting while holding our collective breath to see how the Covid vaccines will work; waiting to see how the vaccine roll-out will work; waiting (and hoping) that the end of this pandemic will come soon. And in a year when so much that is systematically wrong with the world has been revealed - racism, misogyny, poverty, just to name a few - we also wait for the vision that Mary proclaims to come true. We are waiting for a time when the proud will have been scattered, when the powerful will have been dethroned, when the lowly will have been lifted up, when the hungry will have been fed. God of hope, be with us in our waiting. Sustain our hope so that we can be confident that our waiting is not in vain. Help us to know, to trust, that resurrection and new life are not only possible but are here and now. Help us to trust that no matter how long the night seems, the joy that comes with the dawn is drawing ever closer. We pray all of this in the name of Jesus, our endless source of hope. Amen.
Today, as I wake, I remember the names of 14 women. Geneviève Bergeron. Hélène Colgan. Nathalie Croteau.... Barbara Daigneault. Anne-Marie Edward. Maud Haviernick. Maryse Laganière. Maryse Leclair. Anne-Marie Lemay. Sonia Pelletier. Michèle Richard. Annie St-Arneault. Annie Turcotte. Barbara Klucznik-Widajewicz. Fourteen women, killed by a man's hatred of women. As I remember their names, I also remember the thousands of missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls across this land. As I remember their names, I also remember the trans women who have been killed at the hands of men's hatred and fear. As I remember their names, I also remember the women the world around who have been killed by men's violence and power. In remembering these women, and the fact that their lives were cut short by man's violence, I commit myself again to be a person who works against men's violence against women, and a man who calls and challenges other men to do the same. Geneviève Bergeron. Hélène Colgan. Nathalie Croteau. Barbara Daigneault. Anne-Marie Edward. Maud Haviernick. Maryse Laganière. Maryse Leclair. Anne-Marie Lemay. Sonia Pelletier. Michèle Richard. Annie St-Arneault. Annie Turcotte. Barbara Klucznik-Widajewicz. 14 women who I can remember, who also remind me of all the women whose names I do not know. May their memory change the world.

On December 6, women, men and families will gather at vigils and memorials across the country to commemorate the 14 young women who were murdered by a gunman ch...anting I hate feminists on December 6, 1989 at the Ecole Polytechnique in Montreal. National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women also known as White Ribbon Day was established in 1991 by the Parliament of Canada. This is an annual day of mourning and remembrance for the 14 young women. On December 6 this is also an annual day to reflect that more than 70% of the victims of domestic homicide are women. Gender based violence continues to be a brutal reality for nearly 300 women and their children who flee a violent household every day in Canada. These are just the numbers in which have been reported as thousands of other women do not report their physical or psychological abuse. Whether that be inside or outside the home. Gender based violence can only be reduced if we take action and are not silent. Together we must challenge the attitudes, behaviors and sexism that contribute to making women victims of violence in our communities. On December 6 we ask that you help mourn the loss of the 14 lives that were taken on December 6, 1989. And that you stand with us, to help reduce gender-based violence in our communities. Together let’s recommit to take action and confront all forms of violence against girls and women, wherever we see it.
