When reviewing your employee's performance, I've found it helpful to break it into three categories: 1. Technical 2. Admin 3. People... Technical is the skill requirements of their job. How have they been developing these skills and adding new ones? Admin is the process aspect of their job. How are they at organization, and productivity? How can they be more efficient and effective in their role? People is the human side. How are they developing relationships? Are they able to show leadership abilities? The next step is to combine a discussion about performance and development around each of the three areas. Performance is focused on the past and development is focused on the future. By combining the performance/development conversation, your employees can see how improvement is not a punishment conversation (you need to do better), but rather an opportunity to advance and bring more to their careers (I want to do better).

Don't take the culture of your business for granted. Culture is the pulse, the essence of your business. When unprecedented change happens (like a pandemic), that pulse gets affected. Things you took for grated like respect, trust and communication get tested and sometimes strained. Be sure to take the time to work on your culture as much or more than you work on the other aspects of your business like sales, production and efficiency.
