Earth Day every day, but today is special.

Happy Earth Day everyone! Today marks the 51st celebration of Earth Day. A day that gathers a billion people in nearly 200 countries to rally for this important environmental movement. People have been taking part in teach-ins, cleanups, tree-planting and more during April’s earth month.... Here in Canada, I’ve been taking part in my neighbourhood cleanup. Ugh, can I express my loathing of plastic packaging, construction waste, cigarette butts, and polystyrene! I was picking up near one of the 20 most important habitat areas in Alberta, and couldn’t help think these poor birds must have stomachs riddled with waste. We humans need to do better! Thank you to everyone doing their bit to help #RestoreOurEarth. On a side notethese pictures were taken on some of my hikes into the beautiful Canadian Rockies. I LOVE hiking and backcountry so preserving our earth is very real to me. It's finished and live! Here are ways we can celebrate with less waste!

Yesterday was the Big Lake Community Cleanup to celebrate Earth Day and the Great Global CleanUp. The Big Lake Community League partnered with Scouts Canada to help clean up our neighbourhood. A big thank you goes out to my superhero partners @alanakornik and her daughter Alexa, for helping to organize this great event. ... We had an amazing turnout of volunteers of all ages who tirelessly picked up the ridiculous amount of trash on our trails, paths, neighbourhoods + habitats. The Big Lake area is considered to be one of the 20 most important habitat areas in Alberta, which is why the amount of garbage we picked up this weekend is of concern. And there’s still a lot more out there! The copious amount of construction waste (insulation, tile, metals, rebar, plastic sheeting, plastic strips, styrofoam etc.) lying all around the streets, lots, trails and marshes is pollution. Here’s our informal waste audit: Construction waste = extremely high amounts Cigarettes = medium Business signs = medium Household waste = medium Recyclables + Returns = minimum Party Waste = minimum We had an amazing turnout of volunteers of all ages who tirelessly picked up the ridiculous amount of trash on our trails, paths, neighbourhoods, + habitats in the first place. Plastic tape... Did you know according to Zero Waste Canada that Canadians use 6+ million rolls of tape to wrap up presents? That’s a lot! And another article from @environmentjournal states that sticky tape used in the UK could wrap the globe 499 times over the holiday season. Although small and inconspicuous, plastic tape + dispenser is waste. ... Depending on your community, some recycling depots won’t take wrapping paper because it’s laden with plastic tape and bows. At the end of the day, plastic tape is plasticand as we know plastic never goes away! So what’s the solution? Here are some options that I've been trying to use instead of plastic tape: -try going plastic tape-freeit’s tricky but doable. You can use ribbons or twine instead of tape. -use paper or cellulose tape which is biodegradable -reusable bags -fabric wrap With a bit of imagination, you can skip the plastic tape for more eco-friendly options. Eco-friendly wrapping paper. For that traditionally wrapped present choose paper that can either be reused, recycled or composted. Reuse: It sounds odd, but I do reuse my Kraft wrapping paper until tattered and torn. I even iron it! Recycle: Check your local recycling facility to learn what they will accept. Best to avoid gloss, glitter & foil paper. Kraft paper is always a sure bet to be recycled.... Composted: Kraft paper is the perfect ‘brown’ needed for your home compost. Avoiding paper with heavy ink, glow and glitter. Happy eco-wrapping!
