The phone rings and you pick up. The person on the other end is threatening you and telling you that they have accessed your bank account and will freeze your accounts if you don't follow their directions. They sound convincing and raise your concern or downright scare you. They will give you instructions on what to do and tell you not to tell anyone or there will be consequences. What do you do? For some this can be quite a scary and unexpected situation. This can happ...en to anyone at anytime. What to do? If you receive a phone call like this, hang up right away and call police immediately. We are always here to help you. Media release from Guelph Police Service Alert bank staff saves female from fraud An alert bank employee and a Guelph Police Service communicator worked together Monday to save a female from falling victim to fraud. Shortly before 1 p.m., police received a call from an employee of a bank on Woodlawn Road West near Woolwich Street. The caller indicated there was a distraught female in the branch saying she was being threatened and needed to withdraw $5,000 immediately. The female was on her cellphone with a male who claimed her bank account had been compromised and she needed to withdraw $5,000 or her accounts would be frozen, and that he would provide further direction once the cash was withdrawn. The bank employee tried to convince the female it was a fraud, and contacted police for assistance. A police communicator spoke to the female and convinced her to hang up on the male and not withdraw the cash. Officers attempted to call the suspect back but the phone number used was determined to be an untraceable Internet-based number. The incident remains under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call Constable Shayne Finoro at 519-824-1212, ext. 7378, email him at [email protected], leave an anonymous tip for Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or leave an anonymous tip online at www.csgw.tips. The Guelph Police Service reminds the public to be very cautious whenever you are speaking with someone you don’t know, especially online or over the phone. Please also seek advice from a family member, co-worker, trusted friend or the Guelph Police Service at 519-824-1212 before following through on instructions received from a person that you don’t know.

Gathering indoors is not allowed, except with members of your household (or one other household if you live alone). Check out link for more info. Let’s get through this as quickly as possible but we can’t if we choose to ignore measures put in place for the health of our families and communities.

In early 2020, an envelope containing just over $1000.00 was found on the floor at one of the checkouts at Freshco on Malden Road. The money was turned in at the store in the hope of identifying the owner of the money. No person had come forward searching for the lost funds which have since been turned over to the LaSalle Police. If this cash belongs to you we ask that you contact the LaSalle Police Service at 519 969-5210. You will be required to provide specific details of when you lost the cash, the envelop, the denominations of the funds as well as any other proof that the funds belong to you. Please be honest as it is a criminal offence to mislead a police officer during an investigation.
