R E T E N T I O N It’s not just a 9 letter word, it’s a key element to keeping a consistent clientele for some of us lash artists. But can we crack the code to achieving ideal retention? We’ve all had to face a client say at their fill I had such a good hold last time and now it’s not the same. Look at this eye! Why?... Retention is multifaceted. Which is basically our professional way of saying, I don’t have a fucking clue! But all truth, we can using our knowledge help determine what could have happened. And no, it’s not just blaming it on their aftercare. Take my client in the image, this is a 3 week retention. One eye, shows what an ideal hold is while the other, not so much. But notice how there’s almost no grow out on the ideal side? Sometimes by simply analyzing our work, we can notice common patterns that arise in our practice. Like my example above: good hold & no growth = telogen phase. But will likely shed and regrow between now and the next fill. Have open dialogue with your clients about what the reality of what their wear could be. By doing so, you avoid those dreaded questions and elevates you as the professional that you are! LASH LIFTING Q & A I have been getting so many messages about lash lifting lately that I felt the need to address some of the popular questions publicly. But please don’t stop the questions coming in the comments if you have more to ask! Q: my client has thick lashes, should I leave the solutions on longer?... A: not necessarily. Assuming thicker lashes need more developing time isn’t always true. Because our biochemistry in our hair isn’t visible to the naked eye, we cannot always determine by thickness of the lash whether it can handle longer processing or not. However, the hair texture can actually help guide timing much more effectively. Q: how can I guarantee my clients have a successful lift? A: sadly you can’t until you’ve determined their perfect processing time. To figure this out will require some trial and error over the course of a couple appointments. I believe in informing your clients that their first couple of lifts may not last as long as they can until we find that sweet spot. It’s always best practice to process less and need to relift or increase time next time than over process to guarantee the results. Note: not all brands allow a relift. Q: it’s been 6 weeks since my lift, my lashes are wonky and frizzy, why? A: The main reason why lashes go wonky after a lift is because they’ve grown out. Changing the structure of your hair doesn’t influence the new growth. This is why if my clients arrive with mainly babies and teenage lashes I ask them to come back in a month so we lift mainly adult lashes. 2 reasons why lashes go frizzy or dry is because of over processing and/or lack of aftercare. Without conditioning your lashes post lift, they’re susceptible to drying out. Think about it, do you bleach your hair and then not condition it? Lash lifting is a simple service to learn but has many variables that effect its outcome. This is why post training mentoring is so important. Lashes are so much more than just a service now. They’re a way of life. For me, they’ve completely changed mine and as artists, we’re all pretty much obsessed with this industry. C O N F I D E N C E From a perfect passport photo pose to I’m ready for my close up Mr. Deville, lashes invoke more than beauty, they invoke attitude. One of the most fulfilling components to this job outside of connecting with other artists around the world, is how many smiles a day we get to watch leave our studios. The impact we get to have on women is what keeps me loving what I do. ... It’s common knowledge that lashes are addicting.... uhhhh no duhhhh!
