@science.bae What’s inside a CELL? . Hey Habibis! Happy Wednesday ! I had an idea for doing a whole cell on my face for a while now and I am so excited to finally share it with you!! Let’s get some Halloween inspiration together! . SCIENCE: I like to think of a cell as a working factory. HEAR ME OUT. Inside the nucleus (the black/blue circle) instructions for proteins are found- think of this as the instructions for building a bike. The rough endoplasmic reticulum (Blue... network) has ribosomes on it (red dots) which read the instructions and build the protein - this is like an assembly line putting together the bike. The Golgi apparatus (green pancakes) packages up the proteins and gets them ready for shipment out of the cell- like the people boxing up the bikes in the factory. The mitochondria (red/yellow beans) generate energy for the cell to produce these proteins - just like a furnace provides heat energy. . Who can identify the brown barrels on my chin? HINT . They are involved in cell division. . @science.bae Why was the mushroom invited to all the parties...? . ... Because everyone thought he was a really fun-guy. His name was also Kawhi . . Happy Hump day Habibis ! Today I am back at it , with this weeks science-makeup look! Who loves a good fungus? I do . Not only are they a delicious addition to a ton of dishes (Creamy mushroom pasta being one of my favourites), they also serve many beneficial functions in nature. Let’s talk about those functions!... . SCIENCE : Have you ever seen a mushroom looking fungus growing on the side of a tree stump while strolling through the forest? You were most likely looking at a mycorrhizae fungus. These fungi are in symbiotic relationships with trees like pine or oak . A symbiotic relationship is one where both parties involved benefit. In this relationship the fungi will colonize the root system of the host plant and increase the roots surface area, and thus increase the plants ability to absorb water and nutrients from the soil. In return, the plant provides the fungi with many carbohydrates (sugars =food) which are formed when the plant performs photosynthesis. This colonization of mycorrhizae fungi on plant roots allow both organisms to thrive in nature. This is probably why about 90% of all vascular plants (those that transport water and sugars) live in some type of symbiotic relationship with mycorrhizae. . Can you think of a symbiotic relationship in your life that you are in? . REPOST @science.bae I showed you my pipette... . ...pls respond - @lab_shenanigans . . It is finally here !!! I present to you , the infamous pipette! I have been so pumped to do this look, I can’t even explain! Last week I asked Darrion (@lab_shenanigans) to send me a picture of his favourite pipette in lab. Of course he sends me this (swipe to see). I had a good LOL moment and decided challenge accepted. If you haven’t checked out his page, you NEED to, his lab humou...r could brighten anyone’s day! . SCIENCE: The device you see on my face is a pipette. This tool is used all the time in biological research because it measures very tiny volumes of liquid. A lot of the reactions we do in a molecular biology lab take place at the microLitre scale. 1 micro litre (uL) = 0.001 millilitre (mL). THATS TINY! Some reactions I run only require 0.25 uL ! It’s the tiniest little droplet ever ! The best part about these is that you can set them to dispense a very specific amount of liquid, so you never have to worry about adding too much/too little of something! Do you use pipettes in your research? .
