This is the McKellar Tartan. Our alpacas provided the black and grey fibres. The dark fawn is from Bearden Alpacas who are very near the village of McKellar.

Laslyn Alpaca 23.04.2021

We don't use all of our alpaca fibre ourselves, sometimes other fibre artists will come to us looking for a certain colour or grade of fibre and if we can help them out we will. These two batches of fibre were picked up last week by a member of the Upper Canada Fibreshed. The black and grey fibre will be used by Wave Weir to weave the McKellar 150th Anniversary tartan throws. Carolyn's family used to cottage near McKellar so this project is special to her. I'll share a ...photo of the tartan in another post. The 15 pounds of white fibre is for a new project being created by Deborah of Upper Canada Weaving. It is humbling to see our fibre being used by such talented fibre artists. https://www.facebook.com/uppercanadaweaving/posts/1633261953505797 https://www.facebook.com/UpperCanadaFibreshed/ . ; #ethical #sustainable #OntarioAlpaca #UpperCanadaFibreShed #sustainablehomedecor

Update #5 The final steps for our custom order rug. It has been quite the experience learning how to wet felt, wash and rinse something this big. Doug built a stand so we could rinse it in the tub and let it hang till it stopped dripping. There will be a description beside each ... Finished photos will follow soon. #ethical #sustainable #OntarioAlpaca #UpperCanadaFibreShed #sustainablehomedecor #alpacarugs #customdesign

UPDATE #4 custom order rug. VIDEO This is the final run through the FeltLOOM. Next we will steam press it, then somehow wash it and give it a good wet felting as well. Then it has to dry and be steam pressed again. If it were summer we would take it outside to wash it it, but with all this snow that's not going to work.... #ethical #sustainable #OntarioAlpaca #UpperCanadaFibreShed #sustainablehomedecor #alpacarugs #customdesign

UPDATE #3 on our custom order rug. The customer wanted a bit more black than grey, so we widened all of the black pattern. The customer was happy with that so we started felting it. I've put an explanation for each picture with it, click the picture to open. Hopefully tomorrow I will have a video showing the final run through.... #ethical #sustainable #OntarioAlpaca #UpperCanadaFibreShed #sustainablehomedecor #alpacarugs #customdesign

Update #2 on custom order rug. On this rug we are using fibre that has been washed, then fluffed by hand instead of using batts. Using raw fibre gives the rug a completely different look and texture. With each custom order we do, we send the customer updates with photos to be sure this was what they had envisioned. This is the time for any changes to be made before the rug has gone through the FeltLOOM.... We are going to be making a few changes to the pattern, once the customer has approved I'll post another update. To read the comments of each photo, please click the photo. #ethical #sustainable #OntarioAlpaca #UpperCanadaFibreShed #sustainablehomedecor #alpacarugs #customdesign

We love doing custom orders, this rug is the biggest we have ever created - it is 5.6' X 9'. We had to add a few extra tables to support it. I've put comments beside each photo explaining the steps as we go along. With the winter dryness in the studio the fibre can become very staticky so we have the humidifier running full steam and will be down in the studio this afternoon to start laying out the pattern.... #ethical #sustainable #OntarioAlpaca #UpperCanadaFibreShed #sustainablehomedecor #alpacarugs

Sara and her family were at the ranch for an Alpaca Tour back in September, while she was her she bought some of our alpaca socks. This week we received an email from Sara with the following message: "I have to tell you, on Sunday we went hiking and I ended up with my feet submerged in a creek. For the next hour my feet stayed warm, even though they were wet. Those Alpaca socks were worth every dollar and then some! She later added "Remember it was in January, i.e. pretty... freezing cold water ! " Thank you Sara for sharing your experience with our socks. So if you are spending time outdoors trying to keep busy, we have lots of alpaca socks in stock to keep your feet nice and warm. . . . #grateful #familytimes #alpaca #alpacasocks #Canadianalpacasocks #alpacafarm #alpacafarmvisit #alpacasontario #alpacasneartoronto #BlogTO #GreyCountyTourism #GreyHighlands #SupportSmallBusiness

We love creating custom orders for people. This scarf was a special request from our granddaughter. The main scarf is created using the fibre from her favourite alpaca, Tiny Treasure. The grey alpaca and her initials are from a piece of grey alpaca fabric left over from another project. For the ever practical person on your Christmas gift list - we have Dryer Balls. They should be called Save The Earth Balls. They are created from the courser alpaca fibre, we don't waste anything. They last for years and years and when they are no longer of use just throw them into the comp...ost pile. Christmas will be different for many people this year. We may not be able to spend it with all the family as we have in the past. Perhaps mailing gift certificates would be easier than trying to wrap and mail a big parcel. Gift certificates fit all sizes and are always appreciated. We have gift certificates for our KBAR Alpaca Farm Tours and for Laslyn Alpaca products. You can order your gift certificate online for Alpaca Tours go to www.alpacatours.ca, For items from ou...r store go to www.LaslynAlpaca.com. We are in the midst of updating our Laslyn Alpaca page, if there is something you want but don't see it, please send us an email telling us what you are looking for. As a small business we truly appreciate all the support and sales of gift certificates we have received. If you would like to shop in person please call to arrange a time, 519-986-3758. Remember as a kid getting socks in your stocking? Boring. Funny but now as adults many would be thrilled to find a pair of warm comfy alpaca socks in their Christmas stocking. ... We have 3 different types available. Our Ribbed Alpaca Socks are great for year round wear, the perfect blend of alpaca, nylon and spandex to make them comfortable, very durable and long lasting. For the outdoor winter person then you need the Thermal alpaca Socks. These are meant for Canadian winters eh!, snowmobiling, hockey, curling, making snow forts, hiking, if you work outside these are what you need. The Alpaca Dress Socks are lighter weight than our other socks, great for a dressed up occasion. These socks are both machine washable and dryer safe unlike our ribbed and thermal socks. Pip Squeak and Truly Grey't (along with the rest of their group) found being outside in the rain just lovely. They look soaking wet but it really is only on the top of their fibre, it runs off and doesn't penetrate through to the skin. Underneath the yucky looking wet mess they are actually dry and nice and warm. Another benefit of wearing alpaca - it doesn't absorb moisture quickly but still keeps you warm even when it does get wet.... #grateful #alpaca #alpacafarm #alpacafarmvisit #alpacasontario #GreyCountyTourism #GreyHighlands, #supportsmallbusiness #sustainablefashion #UpperCanadaFibreShed

We love our FeltLOOM. This article gives a bit of background into this unique piece of equipment. Carolyn went to Kentucky to learn about it and knew it was something we needed at Laslyn. Now that we can start going out again, alpaca socks would make a great gift for Father's Day. Great for every day use or for the the dad that likes hiking, golfing, camping or hanging out at the cottage. These are great year round socks, they wick away moisture in the summer to keep your feet from feeling hot and sweaty while keeping you warm in the winter. ... Laslyn Alpaca 07.02.2020

Our first cria of the season has arrived ! Tyrone is a beautiful grey, he has several different shades of grey throughout his coat. I can already visualize a delicate shawl with wisps of white through it. But I'll have to wait for at least another year to create that.

Laslyn Alpaca 23.01.2020

We are busy working behind the scenes right now. Updating our website, adding more products, marketing research and more. Okay I'll admit for me it's not as fun as creating products but it all needs to be done and it all works together so let's move along. Working on our marketing we are trying to find where our customers hang out? Where do you look for articles about sustainable fashion, reducing our footprint? Do you have a favourite fashion magazine, do you follow a m...agazine or blog on-line, if so what is it? Thanks for your help. #sustainablefashion #alpacafashion #alpaca #zerowaster #supportlocal

Laslyn Alpaca 16.01.2020

The last few months have been so different, many people are struggling, some days it is hard to find a bright moment. What has been a positive experience or moment for you during this challenging time? Please feel welcome to share on this post. Anyone who has met me knows I think the world revolves around our 5 year old (to be 6 in 2 weeks) granddaughter, Emily. Who knew when she came to visit for March Break that she would still be here 2 months later? She has truly bri...ghtened things up for us and kept us on our toes. Emily loves to celebrate and has been here to celebrate St. Patrick's Day, Easter, The First Day of Spring, Earth Day, Mother's Day. We even celebrated her birthday yesterday as her momma's have to go back to the city to work after visiting for 2 weeks. Our family and business are very concerned about the environment and we re-use and recycle everything possible - we also try to reduce our purchases. We aren't yet at zero waste but pretty close. With having a creative kiddo around who loves to celebrate we have been re-using our kraft paper for lots of drawing, and banners to decorate and celebrate. The Kraft paper has been re-used to make streamers and banners after it has already been used to wrap raw fibre up on shearing day, or to carefully wrap the batts of fibre up after being washed and processed. This video shows one of the streamers we made for Mother's Day. Emily has also been using our recycling to build creative toys. I haven't been as busy as I should be creating things for Laslyn, but I think it's important for Emily to feel safe and have happy and positive memories during this challenging time. #Reuse #Reduce #recycle #sustainablefashion #alpaca #Covid19

We are busy working on getting the descriptions and photos of all of our products on-line. Now I'm stumped ! How would you describe this scarf with holes in it? I put the holes there on purpose but I didn't know I would have to come up with a name for it. All suggestions welcome :)

A very belated Grey Highlands welcome to Lesley & Michael Telfser. Their first visit to our Open Barn & Country Market was last July. The cozy shawl Lesley purchased is 100% alpaca from our own herd and made right here. We create each piece one at a time. Laslyn Alpaca 02.10.2019

Still looking back, this was the day we had our FeltLOOM set up and ready to try out. It has been a huge learning curve, things don't always turn out as expected, but it has been interesting.

Laslyn Alpaca 29.09.2019

This was the beginning of Laslyn Alpaca . I drove to Kentucky to pick it up. At this stage we didn't even have a business name, we just knew we needed this machine.

Laslyn Alpaca 23.09.2019

We wish you a Happy Easter.

We hope everyone is safe at home. A huge thank you to all of the front line workers and essential workers, we would never get through this without you. Laslyn Alpaca is a non-essential business and our physical store is closed until we are allowed to re-open. Orders can still be placed on-line.

As disappointed as we are about the cancellation of this event we respect the choices being made. As they stated "The WHO has declared COVId 19 to be a pandemic. This isn't a call to panic, but it is a call to be responsible and to consider the health of our neighbours, the capacity of our hospitals and the weight of the moment."

TA DA!! Our kitchen rug is finished and is being used already. It was put through the FeltLOOM about 12 times, then washed and ironed. All the brown fibre used on this rug was from when we do demonstrations to show how the machine works. The other various coloured bits of fluff were left over from other projects We don't waste anything here.... #sustainablefashion #alpacafashion #homedecor

Laslyn Alpaca 04.06.2019

Are you still using Dryer Sheets ? Please take a moment to read this article you may be surprised at how toxic they really are. https://draxe.com/health/dryer-sheets/

Laslyn Alpaca 02.06.2019

This sneak peak is a rug I'm making for our kitchen. It is all being made from leftover bits of fibre and sample pieces. When we demonstrate how the FeltLOOM works we make small squares using short coarser fibre, all the dark brown in the photos are demonstration pieces that have been lightly felted together. The rest is leftover bits of fibre from other projects. It starts with a base of jute, then one layer of stronger fibre, the same fibre that is used for our duve...ts. Next I started laying out the brown pieces and filled in the spaces with the other colours which were mainly loose fibre and not felted at all. Stay tuned to see the final result. See more

Laslyn Alpaca 28.05.2019

Something to make you smile on this grey day !

Laslyn Alpaca 19.05.2019

We work very hard to leave as small a footprint as possible. We recycle, compost, reuse everything we can. After two years this is all of the true garbage we have collected making our scarves, shawls, hats, mitts and rugs. The white bits of fabric are polyester, they are cut offs from the carrying cloth we use at the start of each creation. The plastic case pieces are from needles, combs, cutters that we have bought, the cardboard backing went to the compost pit.... The majority of the garbage is the cellophane tape that was used to keep the batts of fibre wrapped in Kraft paper closed. We have asked the main mill we use to switch to masking tape which can go right out in the compost, so we will have even less garbage now. The black bits are off the foam mats we have on the floor, a few pieces of synthetic yarn and a broken elastic.

Laslyn Alpaca 12.05.2019

If anyone has large foam pieces they don't need, we can always use them here.

Laslyn Alpaca 03.05.2019

I forgot to pack my Thermal Alpaca socks to go ice skating last week. The temperature was -13c along with a wind strong enough to make you wobble but it didn't matter, I had on my Ribbed Alpaca socks and my feet were nice and warm. http://www.laslyn.com/store/Socks-c32175062 #alpacasocks #alpacawarmth #alpacasontario #iceskating #warmfeet

Laslyn Alpaca 17.04.2019

People ask how warm is alpaca ? It is rated 6 times warmer than wool. As you can see it is warm enough that the girls didn't see any point in going inside the barn during the freezing cold and snow we had the other night. There are 3 alpacas in this picture and about 6 more off to the side. #sustainablefashion #alpacafashion #alpacasontario #alpacawarmth

This is your chance to get everyone something warm and cozy for Christmas. We will have hot apple cider simmering away for you while you do your shopping and visit the alpacas. Please remember we will be accepting donations for the Markdale Food Bank and the Grey Highland Firefighters Toy Drive.

We are all set up and ready at the Blue Mountain Christmas Gift Sale. We have lots of wonderfully warm alpaca socks, insoles, hats, mitts, shawls. We have a great assortment of stuffed animals all made from alpaca.... For the household we have dryer balls, duvets and one of a kind area rugs. I can't wait to sample the soup from Franny's Farmhouse, she is the vendor next to us. #BlueMountain #alpacafashion #sustainablefashion #Christmasgifts #alpacasocks #alpacasontario #Laslynalpaca
