Conversations Confronting COVID-19: Aging Virtual Event Series Wednesday, July 22, 2020 11:30 AM 12:30 PM... online webinar by Queens The COVID-19 pandemic has threatened our health and communities, including some of our most vulnerable populations, such as the elderly. What has the national and global response to the pandemic taught us about our preparedness for such a virus? Have we failed or succeeded in our duty to safeguard the most vulnerable members of our society? What are the lessons learned around long-term care? How will the pandemic influence our long-term strategy for healthy aging? These are some of the important questions we’ll examine during Conversations Confronting COVID-19: Aging Lessons learned about Canada’s elderly population and long-term care, the second session in the Discover Research @ Queen's virtual event series. Join the webinar, moderated by Dr. Jane Philpott, to hear from a panel of experts from health care, research, and policy-making, and for the opportunity to participate in the Q&A session. If you haven't seen and read the CBC article (June 26, 2020) noted in the web link provided below I would encourage you to check it out. I firmly believe, the information contained in the CBC web article is worth sharing with as many people as you know. The CBC cited news article may hopefully, help to encourage a future community wide local dialogue of how important it is to protect, preserve and improve the current range charitable and non-profit services that many Canadi...ans use, but often have taken for granted to date. Many of the users of these at-risk charities and non-profit service agencies are some of our most vulnerable fellow citizens of all ages. https://www.cbc.ca//pandemic-covid-coronavirus-charities-1 Basically, CBC and Image Canada researchers are reporting how the current pandemic is creating many negative realities for a growing number large and small charitable service agencies across Canada who are suddenly being forced to reduce, merge, or close down their former current range of public services. This CBC report does not even touch on the negative trends already impacting government funding and regulatory agencies, and other public and private for profit businesses that are often vital community business partners with most local and national charitable and non-profit community service organizations. A very sad national and global reality trend facing all community stakeholders everywhere at the present time! So many services of all types used and highly valued by most members of the public are suddenly at risk due to the many diverse negative impacts of this one pandemic is causing governments, service agencies and individuals in all communities both here in Canada and around the world. On a concluding positive personal note, I can envision three possible future positive outcomes that these current negative disruptive corporate service trends may hopefully result in, within most progressive thinking communities across Canada: More future innovative business, government and inter-agency cooperative and mutually respectful service agreement partnerships. A greater public appreciation by most Canadians of the important vital role that all community volunteers, staff, volunteer boards members of all charities and non-profit service organizations play in helping to build a more safe, affordable, healthy, intellectually enlightened, culturally enriched, compassionate, equitable and inclusive world. And, may new and improved creative ways and means be soon discovered, and quickly implemented, in order to continue to provide the most needed and valued volunteered based charitable and non-profit services at both the local community, national and/or international levels. Sincerely, Stan Sherry
