Latifa's Herbs 13.05.2021

What a pleasure to participate in Clea Anaïs's music video Powerful Women, I'm looking forward to the release next week so I can share. Clea invited me to provi...de an interview as one of the many amazing women featured in the video. This was a really lovely experience and I was glad to be able to share my love of plants, and the urgency with which we must all act if we are going to take a stand against the profound environmental degradation occurring today. I will be hosting a workshop on the Ethics of Wild Harvesting with the Horticultural Centre of the Pacific next Tuesday evening from 6:30 to 8pm PST. "Wild harvesting of plant material for food, medicine or craft can be a great way to interact with nature. However, care must be taken to ensure plants are harvested in a sustainable way that promotes that continued survival of wild populations. Through the lens of 5 commonly available wild plants this class will discuss plant usage and sustainable harvesting methodologies. We will also consider locations for harvesting, invasive species, and ecological impacts of human disturbance. Resources to support an ethical wild harvesting practice will be provided. This is our beautiful pet Stapelia sp. native to South Africa and sometimes called carrion flowers. This succulent is not a cactus or euphorbia but is actually in the Apocynaceae or dogbane family. I cannot take any credit for the incredible love and care that had brought this beauty to flowering glory. My partner cares for these plant babes with as much care as should be afforded to any living being stuck indoors. Including regular cleaning, grooming and feeding which inclu...des rotating plants regularly to change light exposure. We have been waiting impatiently for well over a month for this gorgeous bloom to open. I was extremely excited as I've never smelled a corpse plant stench before. I have to say that to my nose it is worse than imagined and makes me feel a little sick. Our cat is, however, interested.... So cool... #stapelia #carrionflower # latifasherbs

I do not want to see open-pit coal mining in our precious Eastern Slopes, where much of our unique biodiversity and rare plant species can be found. Let's have our voices heard. We can win this! https://www.ab4coalfreesw.ca//the-grassy-mountain-coal-min

Sage, lavender and thyme are perennials native to the Mediterranean that are hardy in Calgary/ Mohkinstis. Can you guess which is which? My partner has been growing these plants for years. They are very slow growing here so it takes patience if you are planning to harvest them. My favourite uses are:... lavender - anxiolytic sage - antimicrobial (mouth/throat) thyme - antimicrobial (immune support) #herbalmedicine #perennials #herbs #lavender #calgaryhardy #sage #thyme #anxiety #immunesupport #tincture #latifasherns
