Today we remembered the Mass Deportations of March 25, 1949, when more than 42,000 people fell victim to the brutality of the USSR and were deported to Siberia.... Many never returned. During the night of March 24, the arrests took place in homes, during the day at work, while some children were taken directly from their schools. They were sent to Siberia in cattle train cars unsuited for people. It was exactly 1 year ago today - on Wednesday, March 11th, 2020 that the Latvian Centre held its last event before COVID shut everything down - it was the "Dinner Speaker series with: Zle Liepiš - Demystifying the Latvia - Russia Border". One of the best attended Dinner Speaker series evenings with over 150 attendees! We're looking forward to the day when we can all get together again!
