I would like to send out a huge CONGRATULATIONS to this amazing group who successfully completed the 2nd Essential Skills for Atlantic Fisheries program on July 31, 2020. I can’t even begin to tell you how proud I am of these individuals. Not only did they complete all three components of the program, including classroom training, on-the-job training and work placement - they managed to do it during a global pandemic! On March 9th they started what was supposed to be a 6... week classroom training however the world had other plans. After one week of training, and only a day of computer training - everything was shut down due to Covid-19. It was then announced that we would try virtual training. That’s when the fun started. Some of this group already had a little experience using computers, however some did not. Not only did each participant have to get trained on how to use an online classroom, some of them had to begin by learning computer basics. Although it was a huge learning curve, each and every one of them did FABULOUS! I am confident that they learned more this way then if they stayed in the classroom. This group completed training in the areas of Employability Skills, Essential Skills, Computer Use and Mentor/Mentee Relationships. They completed their Emergency First Aid/CPR C and WHMIS. The participants also took part in plant tours where they learned about processing different foods in the areas of aquaculture and agriculture. They also enjoyed a presentation by Leona Raymond, Food Safety Quality Coordinator with the Department of Fisheries and Land Resources where they received a certificate in Food Safety. I would like to send out a huge THANK YOU to the employers, Louis MacDonald (North Atlantic Aquaponics and M&M Farming Ltd), and Tom Hickey (Sweet Berry Farms) who partnered with us to give the participants an awesome work placement, allowing them to utilize the skills that they learned during their classroom training. You guys are truly amazing! I would also like to thank Advanced Education Skills & Labour for your help in making this a successful program. Again, congratulations to each and every one of you! Jennifer
