Clay Day Today, I love playing in the mud! The smells, the feel, there’s no medium closer to the earth

I used a cardboard box as a #pinholecamera to take these photos. Well, and a coffee cup too. It is amazing how simple it is to make a working camera out of a recycled container, duct tape, and a metal pie plate! All of the negatives were shot directly onto photo paper. The positive images with the black background are contact prints, made by exposing a piece of photo paper to light through the negative print. Not all of the contact prints were successful, so some of the image...s shown here were inverted digitally. Can you see which ones match up? (hint: the image is flipped and inverted). This was a DIY project after my neighbor and artist friend cleared out her shed and old photography student supplies. The developer was old, but never opened, so we weren’t sure if any of it would work, but it did! We curtained off the laundry room and used an orange bulb in an ordinary lamp for a darkroom. Since we didn’t have an enlarger to expose the contact prints, we used a homemade light table on its highest setting and pressed the sheets of photo paper with glass instead. The cameras were made from a shoe box, an empty photo paper box, and a coffee cup. The coffee cup ones are distorted and almost look like a fish eye effect. Since the photography chemical quality was questionable, I should’ve digitally documented them sooner, since you can see from the photos that there is some damage that appeared later after they’ve been stored for a couple years. The vehicle subject in the photo is a 1966 Ford Fairlane 500, belonging to my partner. I had fun taking the pictures of a vintage car in an analog format. What is the best lesson you received from a teacher? When I’m sitting down to draw something, several past teacher’s voices play in my head If I am drawing something from life or photo, this quote is the most frequent, and most helpful. It is a reminder that even our eyes and hands make assumptions, and to draw something accurately in any style, we must truly see it. Sometimes this means breaking down what shape we think something is. This lesson helps me in painting... and even abstract art making to be objective. In life in general, it's a great reminder to truly observe and feel our surroundings and let go of bias. Student art shows are so important I am always amazed at the quality and depth of work that comes from our local high school artists - I’ll definitely be making a trip to ECAH to check this show out!

Success After Struggle. This piece is inspired by the idea of feeling successful after a long struggle. The light circle at the top represents the success, while it is still transparent and fleeting. Is success something that needs to be maintained, or can it be achieved once and last permanently? This is inspired by the layers of memory and subconscious. I am often inspired by my dreams and regularly keep a dream journal, and sometimes have dreams that predict future events in my life (though I don’t know it at the time of having the dream). This piece represents a form of deja-vu, a rusty fog being removed while memory comes into focus and important messages from the subconscious resurface.
