Greenhouse update! On this balmy 20C day I spent lunchtime observing how the plants are growing. It's amazing how some sunshine really perks everyone up! . . . .... . #laurettgarden #zone4garden #greenhouse #greenhousegardening #sudburygardening #backyardnursery #plantnursery See more
It was a beautiful day on Monday prepping these transplants from the grow racks. They are now in the greenhouse. A nice mix of veggies, herbs, annuals, perennials, and native plants. Listen to the robins singing . . . .... . #robin #birdsong #springishere #laurettgarden #zone4gardening #zone4garden #northerngardening #canadiangardening #smallspacegardening #backyardgarden #greenhouse #greenhousegardening #growyourown #northernontario #urbangarden #seedstarting #backyardnursery See more
Do you ever have moments in the garden where you are like, omg I can't believe this is actually growing? I had one of these moments this morning. It was the first night I put some tender plants in the greenhouse overnight. I built a tent for my heater because the GH isn't insulated. I'm also working on trust with my heater at the moment - I still wake up and check the temp through the night lol. So I went in this am checking on some of these tender plants like the basil and... I was like "omg they survived! It's the beginning of April and they survived! Overnight! Outside!" Everyday has big small moments . . . . . #basil #laurettgarden #zone4gardening #zone4garden #northerngardening #canadiangardening #smallspacegardening #backyardgarden #greenhouse #greenhousegardening #growyourown #northernontario #urbangarden #seedstarting #backyardnursery
All of my nursery plants are grown using organic methods meaning healthier soil, healthier plants, and healthier food for your family. Here is a sneak peek at the potting mix that I am using and how it's made. As a small local grower I am proud to be making this for you Shout out to Green & Clean Hydroponics in Sudbury for this recipe.
It feels like full-on Breaking Bad in the greenhouse now We are doing some mega planting this weekend for the nursery and all my indoor lights are occupied at the moment. I've been putting off adding any heat to the greenhouse since it gets down to the same temp as outside overnight. It is also not insulated so we needed some kind of heat with a little bit of insulation. Researching some solutions for heating we discovered a lot of northern folks use double layer poly wi...th blown air between the layers. I've also seen a lot of folks make mini poly tunnels in their planted greenhouses. Thinking of what we could do similar to this, I decided to try making a greenhouse within a greenhouse. I used some vapour barrier and clipped it together with some clips around the frame. It is supposed to get to -10 C tonight so I'm testing out our small electric heater to see if it could maintain a temp of -3 degrees. I have one thermometer outside the poly, one inside and one measuring the outdoor temperature. This will allow me to compare how cold it got outside to how cold it got in the greenhouse to how cold it got in the mini greenhouse inside of the greenhouse On the really cold nights I can use some frost cover over the plants and keep the heat on low but before I put anything in there I gotta test it out! I'm using an Inkbird thermostat that turns the heater on at my set temperature. I love it because I can set an exact temperature for the heater to kick on. Automation is my jam right now. In the mornings I can open up the top and sides so it doesn't overheat and then the roof vents should take care of the cooling. Everyday is an experiment around here. Wish me luck
Super pumped for these Brad's Atomic Grape tomatoes coming up. They will range in colour from purple, green, red, to blue. Apparently they are super delicious and so much fun to grow. First year growing them and they will be available for sale this spring. Ventilation! Today we installed a 12x12" fan in the greenhouse. Based on the size of our greenhouse, it should cycle all of the air in under 10 mins. We have it ready to plug in to an outdoor extension cord. We will have to find some kind of temperature-controlled switch now so it will turn on at high temps. It's kind of helpful just to have it in the wall anyhow because when the roof vents open, it spins by itself with just the small breeze that rolls through. Hopefully this..., with the auto-open roof vents + some shade cloth will allow us to grow throughout the summer in the blazing heat . Will see how it goes. I keep telling myself "its all an experiment" so when I fail (as happens a lot) I'll call it a learning experience . . . . #backyardgreenhouse #laurettgarden #zone4gardening #greenhouse #greenhousegardening #backyardnursery See more
My "sow seeds really early and see what happens" greenhouse experiment is showing early success I have some arugula and romanesco broccoli now sprouting! Holy cats, it's still winter! While I was kind of neglecting these to see what would happen, I now actually have to be responsible and keep them watered . . . .... . #wintergreenhouse #wintergardening #laurettgarden #zone4gardening #zone4garden #northerngardening #canadiangardening #smallspacegardening #backyardgarden #greenhouse #greenhousegardening #homegrown #growyourown #northernontario #urbangarden #seedstarting #backyardnursery See more

We love observing insects in the garden but we did not expect to see a caterpillar this early! I believe this is a ctenucha moth caterpillar. There's still a foot of snow out there and this guy is already out and about . . . .... . #gardeninsects #spring #caterpillar #ctenuchavirginica #laurettgarden #zone4garden #northerngardening #canadiangardening #smallspacegardening #backyardgarden #northernontario #urbangarden See more
