Get to know your Golden Hawk Athletes! Varsity Cross Country runner Chiara Carinci celebrates her Italian culture through family gatherings and authentic Italian food. . "On March 19th, throughout Italy it is a day to honor and give thanks to St. Joseph, the patron saint of workers and artisans. St. Joseph was the Husband of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the legal father of Jesus. In Sicily specifically, during the Middle Ages there was a time where the crops were failed a...nd there was a severe famine and drought. The families prayed to St. Joseph to help by sending them rain. They promised a feast in his name for answering their prayers. The rain came, crops were planted, and people kept their word, and now every year on March 19th they celebrate St. Josephs day. The celebration consists of a three stepped display that represents the Holy Trinity and there is a 12-course meal that is usually donated or asked for. At the celebration they re-enact the scene of when Joseph was knocking on doors asking for a room because Mary, his wife, was about to give birth to Jesus, the son of God. As a kid I would be a part of this re-enactment and I played an angel. My mom would always try to get me to play Mary, but I was too shy. When we were all seated, everyone would proceed to eat the 12 courses. Sometimes breadcrumbs are added to dishes to represent sawdust which commemorates Joseph's work as a carpenter. At the end for dessert we would get these breads that had very beautiful designs, but my mom would never let me eat them because they were so pretty. We still have a couple on display in our dining room. We would also get a dessert called zeppole, which are similar to cream puffs. My mother would tell me that we had these because when the Sicilians originally had their feast, they were very poor and did not have much so the Zeppole were made very plainly. As I got older my Nonna (grandmother) taught me how to make Zeppole and I have my own copy of the recipe in a book with all of my Nonna's other recipes." . Thank you for sharing your story with us @chiara_carinci_! Can you make us a batch of those Zeppoles? PLEASE AND THANKS See more
Week of #embraceyourculture kicks off with another recipe & some facts did you know that curry powder was created by the British to evoke the essence of Indian food? The popular Indian dish known as 'curry' refers to the dish itself being made up of sauce, meat & vegetables, not the spices. One of the main ingredients in curry powder is turmeric. Curry powder can be used to season roasted veggies, add flavour to soup, hummus, eggs & even popcorn! for more curry facts visit the link in our bio to visit 'The Spruce Eats' fact page!
