Over the last few months, we have used a #ThrowbackThursday feature to highlight photos sent to us from fans, alumni, and family members. This will be the last feature related to our current theme. This week, we have great photos to showcase from our current Head Coach, Michael Faulds. In the photos, you will see a group of friends called "Team Faulds" cheering on the Hawks to a 2016 Homecoming victory over the University of Waterloo. The family picture was taken after the 2018 home-opening win over the University of Ottawa. The family photo includes Coach Faulds, his wife Stacey and their two children, Chloe, and Lucas. It was a lot of fun running this feature and I appreciate all the people that took the time to submit a football memory in a digital form.

Thankfully, we get to feature another family photo this week in #ThrowbackThursday. Impromptu family gatherings for photos on the field after the game is one of my favourite parts of game days. In this week's photo, we have the current offensive line coach, Zach Scotto, posing with his family and supporters at University Stadium in 2012. If you have a photo you would like to have featured, please email Coach Ron VanMoerkerke, at [email protected]

There has been a slight lull in photo submissions for this weekly photo-sharing feature for Throwback Thursday. As a result, I will take the opportunity to share two family photos that I have had taken at the University stadium that I especially cherish. The first one is a photo of my brother, Gary VanMoerkerke, who is 18 months older and was playing at the University of Guelph and, our father Karel VanMoerkerke. The year is 1989 and it the first and only time my Dad saw us play University football. The other is a photo taken in 2008 and it includes the linebacking core that I coached at that time and my two children, Grace and Austin VanMoerkerke. Please consider sharing a photo and a brief story to be highlighted with Coach Ron VanMoerkerke at [email protected]

This week on Throwback Thursday, we go back four years to the 2016 Yates Cup played on November 12th. Laurier would fall behind by 21 points in the fourth quarter 40-19, but this group found a way to rally to defeat Western 43-40 on a last-play field goal by Nathan Mesher. The player of the game was QB, Michael Knevel, as he orchestrated multiple 3rd down conversions to keep the dream alive. It was a great victory for the Golden Hawks, and one of the most exciting Yates Cup ever played. This week in #ThrowbackThursday, we look back to this date, December 3rd, 2005, when the Golden Hawks played the Saskatchewan Huskies in the 41st Vanier Cup in Hamilton. Laurier would battle back from a 23-14 deficit in the fourth to put themselves in a position to win the game with a Brian Devlin field goal with 19 seconds left. The Hawks would win the game, finish the season with a 12-0 record and earn the second Vanier Cup in the school's history. It has been 15 years,... but there will be a lot of players, coaches, and staff who will be remembering this day like it was yesterday. This week in #ThrowbackThursday, we celebrate Wilfrid Laurier's first National football championship played on Nov 27th, 1991. Laurier would defeat Mount Allison University 25-18, and the celebration was on in the twin cities. On offence, Laurier relied on an MVP performance by RB Andy Cecchini who ran through holes provided by Peter Gisborn, Tom Heighway and Glenn Ferguson. A swarming defence lead by Tim Bisci, Fred Grossman and Reinhardt Keller would provide all the required defensive stops. The game was played in front of 30,191 mostly Laurier fans at the SkyDome and a reflection of the game, and the season can be viewed in the link provided. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2twSUTr9oSc

This week in Throwback Thursday, we revisit a National Semi-Final game played on this date, November 18th, 2005. The Golden Hawks travelled to Halifax to take on a talented Acadia football team. The game showcased a full team effort by Laurier football. All three phases, Offense, Defense and Special Teams, made plays, and the Hawks won convincingly. The final score was 31-10. Special recognition for this week goes to Gavin Cond (right) on defence and Bryon Hickey (left) on offence. Gavin had a great day compiling 11 tackles, 1 forced fumble and 1 interception. While Bryon had only 3 catches on the day, but they were all for touchdowns and over 100 yards.

This week in Throwback Thursday, we look back to another OUA semi-final game. On this day in 2016, the Golden Hawks would host McMaster and just like the game that appeared in last week's post, it was a big play in the fourth quarter that would help solidify the victory. Late in the game on a critical 3rd short, the defence, anchored inside by Jalen Price, Trevaughan James, and Emerson Gourdet, would stuff the QB sneak. This week's photo captures the joy of Jalen and Emerson and Scott Hutter running to the sideline after the big stop. You can also watch the video recap of the game using the link below. This week in #ThrowbackThursday, we look back to the Yates Cup semifinal win back on October 29th, 1988. Big games are often won in the fourth quarter, and this one was no exception. Dave Cumber's interception of the University of Guelph's pass in the endzone with 14 seconds left sealed the victory for the Golden Hawks. Before the game-winning interception, the Golden Hawks offence put together a great drive featuring the running attack of Luc Gerritsen (left) and Andy Cecchini. The final score was 31 to 24. To honour the defence we have a photo of defensive lineman Bill Madden (right) and the workhorse of the last drive, Luc Gerritsen.

Today we go back to the last game of the 2005 season when Laurier would play the University of Guelph and compete its second consecutive undefeated regular season. The final score was Laurier 47 to Guelph 26. Laurier moved the ball with ease all day, compiling 698 total yards on offence. Nick Cameron, at the time, would become the third TB in Wilfrid Laurier's history to rush for over 1000 yards. To give credit to the offensive line, we have included a photo of guard Mitch Zappitilli. The defence stopped Guelph's run game as they only allowed 26 yards on 14 carries and intercepted the Guelph Quarterback 4 times. To honour the defensive line and some great hair, we have included a photo of Adrian Houwer.
