Winter seed heads... it’s amazing what you can see when you stop to look at the winter garden. Seed heads come in all shapes and forms! #seedheads #wintergarden #silentgarden #meadowgarden #ontarioplants #lavishgardens #livinglandscapes

This backyard used to be just a neglected lawn before we came along and planted new gardens and installed a 40’ long stream. The sound it makes is like a gentle babbling brook and is so calming! We also installed flagstone pathways and natural stone slab steps that lead to the horse stables. This new landscape is all this gorgeous property needed to bring it to the next level. We really look forward to seeing the gardens grow over the next few years to see the full effect that we intended and to soften the rock work on this water feature. We will keep you posted! #naturalstone #pondlesswaterfall #constructedstreams #watergarden #babblingbrook #lavishgardens #livinglandscapes

Let’s talk pollinators! Pollinators need you! And I’m not only talking honey bees: birds, bats, butterflies, beetles, native bees, other insects and even small mammals all play a part in enabling plants to reproduce. Without them, we would have nothing to eat! So instead of annihilating the habitats that sustain these small creatures, many of whom are in decline, by installing lawns or paving over their worlds, let’s close the loop and appreciate their service by providing th...em with some tasty meals! What you can do: share in their wonder by posting about them to your social media; grow a variety of native plants that sustain them; provide them with water in your garden; avoid the use of pesticides and plant to attract predatory insects instead; show some tolerance for the caterpillars that are eating your plants (they will metamorphose into butterflies!); buy organic vegetables and fruits; buy local honey...! #lavishgardens #livinglandscapes #wildlifegardens #pollinatorgardens

Bugbane: such an under-utilized plant in the garden! Perhaps it’s because of its name? Bugbane, a.k.a. snakeroot, black cohosh, bugwort, baneberry. Even the botanists can’t decide: formerly known as Cimicifuga, these plants have been transferred to the genus Actaea . Some gentle gardener must have realized the fear this plant’s name gave rise to and began calling it fairy candles - inspired no doubt by the graceful blooms that lack petals, but that instead are densely clus...tered with thousands of showy white stamens. The common name of bugbane serves this statuesque plant well only in the sense that it is a pollinator magnet! The strong fragrance of honey and flower stalks that sometimes tower above your head bring so much joy to the autumn garden! The dark burgundy leaves of this Brunette cultivar definitely make it a favourite here at Lavish Gardens, and it makes for a great companion to the garden superstar Calamagrostis ‘Karl Forester’ grass! #lavishgardens #livinglandscapes #wildgardens #pollinators #cimicifugaracemosa #actaearacemosa #fairycandles

Ready for a brand new start! After taking some holidays between Christmas and the new year, I feel replenished and ready to tackle what 2021 will have in store for us. A lot of you have asked me how we stay busy over the winter... let me tell you that aside from walking my dog Nina, there is much that needs to be taken care of before Spring comes and we hit the ground running! We will be working on all your designs (there is not much time to sit down to draw and plan during ...the busy season), working on marketing and our website, accounting, hiring to complete our team for the busy season ahead (yes! We are actively hiring for our crews!) and just some major organization across the board. But for today, Nina and I decided to head out and enjoy the warm sunshine and freshly fallen snow, feeling great about the promise of an amazing 2021. Happy New Year everyone!

This year’s Christmas is a challenging one for all of us. On my end, it’s extremely sad that I won’t be able to visit my Mom like I usually do every year at Christmas time. She lives in a retirement residence in Montreal, which is a red zone under lockdown because COVID-19. Nevertheless, my Mom has decorated her entire apartment as though her whole crew was coming over for Christmas dinner. It’s important to remember that we don’t only deck the halls for the company, but also... to cheer our own selves up before the long dreary winter that is coming! I’m sure each and every one of you will be missing some of your loved ones as well this year. Here at our design studio, the countdown has begun before we close shop for the winter. We will be open every day from noon to four until Christmas Eve to provide you with a little bit of cheer for your home! We’ve got beautiful garlands and centrepieces to chose from! We are also still taking orders for wreaths, planters and centrepieces! #christmascheer #lavishgardens
