Dear Community, For any who may not be aware, Erika Chan and Sukhpreet Sangha, of Legal Aid for All, made brilliant and extremely important submissions to the Standing Committee on Justice Policy yesterday. The committee is currently considering Bill 161, which includes a number of drastic and regressive changes to the Legal Aid Services Act, including the removal of Access to Justice from Legal Aid Ontario's mandate, rendering the provision of legal services discretionary, ...creating the opportunity to stack Legal Aid's board with government appointees, and removing significant requirements for community consultation for Legal Aid, among others. For more information on the changes, see the following link for an excellent and informative brief prepared by folks from Osgoode Hall: (https://www.osgoode.yorku.ca//03/Bill-161-Brief-March-6-1.) Anyone wishing to view any remaining submissions on Bill 161 can watch them here: https://www.ola.org//legislat/video/committees-room-no-151 The steering committee would first like to express its deepest gratitude to Ms. Chan, Ms. Sangha, and other members of Legal Aid for All for their hard work preparing and providing these essential perspectives on the proposed changes on a very short timeline. Second, we ask our members to get involved and take action in defense of robust Legal Aid: consider contacting Premier Doug Ford: [email protected]/416-325-1941; Attorney General Doug Downey: [email protected]/705-726-5538 and/or your own MPP: https://www.ola.org/en/members. Folks can also send written submissions to the committee directly, which may still be done before 6:00 p.m. tomorrow: https://hamont.org/justice. In addition, please consider visiting the Legal Aid for All website at https://www.legalaidforall.net/ and getting involved.
