A year ago today the Junos were cancelled. And shortly after, the world as we know it was cancelled. So many things have changed and I don’t have the answers for how we get things back on track, but I do know this: the creativity and resilience I’ve seen in the music biz this past year has been nothing short of incredible. About ten years ago, I started writing articles about the music industry on my website, for my fellow musicians. I couldn’t find answers to questions I had about the legal side of the music biz, no matter where I looked. So I set out to change that. I quickly discovered that some people in positions of power in our industry wanted to keep things as they were, with musicians in the dark. So I kept writing. ... A few dozen read at first. They started posting questions on my website. So I answered. The dozens became hundreds. The hundreds become thousands. I kept answering their questions. I logged in to my website this morning and saw that around 15,000 people visit my site every month. Musicians, producers, managers, label owners, you name it. As a straight white male who happens to also be a lawyer, I’m pretty much a greatest hits of white privilege. I acknowledge this privilege, and will use my platform to support and amplify the voices of those who don’t have it. Here’s a start.... About a month ago I started giving pro bono legal advice to DJC Records in NYC. DJC (Die Jim Crow) is a non-profit record label that releases music of formerly and currently incarcerated musicians, predominantly African American men, providing a platform for their voices to be heard. Here are some photos of these incredible artists, making music and expressing themselves. There is an incarceration problem in America (amongst many, many other problems). It’s big business. Spending on prisons has increased at 300% the rate of spending on public education in the last 30 years. African Americans are incarcerated 5 times more than Caucasians. The powers that be want it to stay that way. DJC gives a voice to the voiceless, and it’s needed now more than ever.
