Dear Lax Kw'alaams, we really appreciate everything you have been doing to help keep the Community safe - from hand washing, to physical distancing, to masking, to kindness - you are all amazing - thank you :) Today we will start a series of Frequently Asked Questions Regarding Covid 19 Safety Measures that the nurses are taking, composed by the First Nations Health Authority: 1. Why don’t nurses self-isolate after arriving in Lax Kw’Alaams?... Community Health Nurses (CHNs) are considered to be essential for the continued functioning of the healthcare system (including the Lax Kw’Alaams Nursing Station). We require nurses to be ready for work upon arrival in Lax Kw’Alaams in order to provide primary care, public health, and emergency services. The BCCDC does not recommend self-isolation of asymptomatic healthcare providers. Preventing healthy nurses from reporting to work may actually pose a risk to the health and safety of community members by limiting the number of nurses available. 2. How are nurses getting to Lax Kw’Alaams? Nurses are travelling by well-established routes to get to Lax Kw’Alaams. Regardless of whether nurses drive to Lax Kw’Alaams or fly via commercial flights, they follow all appropriate COVID-19 prevention measures and Transport Canada requirements for air travel. All regions of B.C. have had cases of COVID-19, and whether we know about positive cases or not we should assume that COVID-19 is present everywhere. This is why, regardless of if a nurse comes from nearby or far away, they follow all COVID-19 prevention guidelines while travelling to Lax Kw’Alaams. Stay tuned for tomorrow's post where we will review FAQs: 3. What measures are being taken to prevent potential spread of COVID-19 when nurses travel into Lax Kw’Alaams? and 4. Should we be concerned about nurses that work in other Health Authorities or hospitals? Questions? Comments? Concerns? Kudos? Please reach out to your Community Leadership :) Thank you
