To reflect: What ways could I have stereotyped people on the basis of their race? In this post, we hope to shed light on various types of racial microaggressions, including some examples. Microinvalidations: Verbal comments or behaviours that exclude, negate, or nullify the psychological thoughts, feelings or experiential reality of a person of colour.... Examples: I don’t see colour, we are all the same, all lives matter Microinsults: Verbal and nonverbal communications that subtly convey rudeness and insensitivity and demean a person’s racial heritage or identity. Examples: how did you get your job?, how did you get such a good score?, you’re so (insert ‘compliment’) for a (insert race) Microassaults: Explicit racial derogations characterized primarily by a verbal or nonverbal attack; meant to hurt the intended victim through name-calling, avoidant behaviour, or purposeful discriminatory. Examples: using racial slurs, avoiding eye contact, saying things like (insert race) people scare me
