The Royal St. John's Regatta is a very important event to our museum. Unfortunately, due to Covid-19, it was cancelled this year. This photo of the 1901 Outer Cove crew was taken in 1922 to commemorate their 9:13 record. Of the original crew, only Daniel McCarthy was not in attendance, having moved to Boston. Instead, the crew asked the taxi driver, Mr. Bishop, that had brought the crew from Outer Cove to stand in McCarthy’s place. (Left to Right): Martin Boland; John Nugen...t; Denis Croke; Denis McCarthy; Mr. Bishop, taxi driver filling in for Daniel McCarthy; John Whelan, stroke; Walter Power, cox. The Outer Cove rowing crew won the Championship 26 times in total since it began in 1873, their best record time being 8:59 in 2017.
