Little Creek Farm Tour
And we are back up and running. Check out the new YouTube channel... I have not had time to put everything back yet but there is one brand new video.
So I just accidentally deleted Little Creek’s YouTube channel! I can’t believe I did that!!! By all accounts it is permanently lost... will have to start again.
Bambi had a perfect day. Yesterday, she was let out of her stall in the morning to roam freely with the dogs. She followed me all day, same as usual. I was finishing morning chores and was about to tidy up but instead of sweeping, I decided to take the pack, including Bambi, for a walk. It was a beautiful day and the snow was melting. Bambi had a really good time. Later, I received a delivery and Bambi ran to the gate with all the others. The guy was killing himself laughing;... in the midst of all the barking were the sonorous sounds of the guard sheep and didn’t she just jump up and down with the dogs! I had to duck into the house for a moment and she was set on coming too. She helped unload the new (to us) snowblower and as I was standing outside talking to the mechanic, I had one large dog come stand on one side and slide his head under my hand and Bambi on the other also placing her head in the most opportune position for petting. A super kind lady dropped of several bags of blankets for the cat colony that establishes itself in the hay loft every winter and Bambi was a part of that too. Bambi did not have a herd of sheep to keep her company and at first she was very lonely. That did not last, all the animals stepped in: the horses shared their pastures, the cows shared their hay, the dogs integrated her into the pack, and at night, when she was in her stall, some of the barn cats were always laying in her manger. I have my priorities straight: 1 their physical well-being 2 their emotional well-being 3 everything else Sweeping falls squarely into the third category. I do it once a day and if I have an extra minute to touch up later I’d rather spend that minute petting, brushing, hugging them than sweeping. I will never regret working a little less and loving a little more yesterday. Bambi was 12 years old. At the end of a perfect day, her heart gave up. We love her forever. I love her forever.
Looking for our forever homes
We just doubled our herd! We now have two cows Shrek was the best in her herd when she slipped and dislocated her hip. The Farmer called the vet who condemned the cow. The kind farmer didn’t want her to be uncomfortable as she awaited her fate for the next day so he helped her outside and brought her her calf (she was a dairy cow in a commercial setting where calves and mommas are separated almost at birth). She was so happy with herself that she moved around and relocated ...her hip! This was a year ago and she has had no problems with it since. When this kind farmer stopped milking, he thought that Shrek (and many of his other cows) deserved to retire too. His primary concern was their well being and he made sure they all went to homes were they would be allowed to pasture. Shrek was only used to free stalls, pasture, and milking parlours but she gave me very little trouble milking her by hand in her box stall. This morning she gave us 10 litres of delicious milk. I already made caramel flan! We are collecting the cream to make butter and tonight I am making yogurt. It has been 20 years since I milked but I haven’t forgotten. My farmer friend plans to keep his land and sell horse hay in the future. I say we thank him for his kindness: if anyone needs to buy horse hay in 2020, send me a message and I will put you in touch.
