We are pleased to let you know that the Learning Disabilities Association of Alberta (LDAA) is now accepting applications for the 2021 Mandin Award. The Mandin Award is up to $800 and is given to assist an Alberta student currently in Kindergarten to Grade 11 who is living with a learning disability. The award may be used to support the costs of attending summer camp, social skill development courses, tutoring, technology, assessments or other services. We are now accepting applications for the Siobhan Isabella Reid Memorial Scholarship (Reid Scholarship). This scholarship is annually given to a full-time student attending an Alberta University or College. This $1,500 scholarship will be awarded to a student enrolled in a program which will lead to that individual being able to assist children and adults with learning disabilities. The student may be enrolled in any faculty of any university or college in Alberta. See the attached application form and award criteria for more information. Here are some great things going on at our Edmonton chapter: Social Skills Group ages 8 - 12 years and ages 13-18 years Does your child struggle with friendships and social cues?... Do they have difficulty with organizational skills? Trouble paying attention or staying on task? Do they have trouble managing their emotions? We Can Help! Join us for our Virtual Social Skills Program starting April 10, 2021 Our groups specialize in children with ADHD, ASD, Tourette’s and Learning Disabilities but all are welcome! Children between the ages of 8-12 years can register for this 6 week program. Running Saturday mornings from 10:00am - 11:30am Youth between the ages of 13-18 years can register for this 6 week program. Running Saturday afternoons from 12:30pm - 2:00pm All sessions are virtual sessions through Zoom Some families are able to obtain FSCD (Family Support for Children with Disabilities) funding for their child to attend this group depending on the determined needs of their child. Our Edmonton chapter has some great things coming up: Join us for our fun, interactive Roblox Social Group for ages 7 years and up! ... Roblox is an educational online video game. It enhances creativity, problem-solving, self-direction, collaboration, and other life skills. Both fun and educational, The purpose of Roblox is for players to interact and make friends. This is achieved by wandering around the online world and stopping to talk with other players within a moderated chat feature. This group is a closed group, only children/youth registered for this group will be playing Roblox together. Saturday February 20, 2021 - Saturday March 27, 2021 1:00pm - 2:30pm Roblox Social Group cost is $50.00 for the 6 sessions Spring Break Session March 29, 30, 31 1:00 pm - 2:30pm Roblox Social Group cost is $25.00 for the 3 sessions Some families are able to obtain FSCD (Family Support for Children with Disabilities) funding for their child/teen to attend this group under respite hours. The goal of Part 2 is to learn how to use the results of the RRST to inform your instruction. You will also be immersed in the foundational skills of reading to increase your competencies in helping children learn to read, including exploration of word skills, text skills, syllable skills, graphemes, phonemes, and phonics. You will also be completing quizzes and various assignments throughout Part 2. Celebrity Sunday Albert Einstein Albert Einstein was gifted with a high level of intelligence. He became known as a great thinker and a super intelligent scientist. He actually changed the viewpoint of mankind about the universe.... He contributed a lot in the field of science but despite his success as a scientist, he suffered from learning disability. During his time, he was diagnosed with dyslexia, autism and attention deficit disorder. But, he was able to overcome all of these challenges as he excelled and gained respect and recognition for all of his accomplishments as a scientist.
