Boasting an impressive, award-filled acting career spanning over 20 years, it’s easy to assume that Octavia Spencer had it easy growing up. However, this is not the case. Spencer recalls struggling with dyslexia in her early life, saying, I didn't realize it was a disability. She remembers the paralyzing fear that came with being required to read aloud in class because she would constantly mix words up, or drop them completely. Spencer credits her mother, who always encour...aged Octavia to keep a positive attitude, for getting through those younger years. She reminded the young Spencer that the only limitations in life were the ones she set for herself. Octavia knew she was smart, and realized that she was gifted with skills that her classmates didn’t have. Through hard work, Octavia Spencer got to where she is today. I have dyslexia says Spencer, explaining that the disorder, does not mean you are not intelligent, it just means your brain functions differently. Spencer is an example that with belief in yourself, anything is possible. #dyslexia #learningdisabilities #ldam #octaviaspencer

Author, TV Personality, and award winning journalist Lisa Ling was diagnosed with ADHD in a very unique way. In 2014, she was reporting on the rise of ADHD and the impacts it has on millions of children across the world. After describing her focus issues growing up to an expert, she had her attention skills evaluated, and it was confirmed that she met the criteria for having ADHD. From the time she was young, Lisa's teachers told her parents that she trouble focusing in clas...s, and by high school her attention issues had become a muckiest bigger issue. "I could go through an entire period and not retain a sentence if I wasn't interested in the topic or the subject matter." At the age of 16 she joined Scratch, a syndicated TV news magazine and spent her junior and senior tears travelling the world and perfecting her on camera skills. After high school she joined Channel One, where she reported on global issues and political unrest. She went on to work at ABC News, PBS, The View and The Oprah Winfrey show and in 2011, her own show "Our America with Lisa Lisa", premiered. "In a strange way, I do feel like it has helped me. I can hyper focus on things that are important to me," she says on how her ADHD has impacted her career. Since her diagnosis, Lisa has become a strong presence in the learning difference community. She encourages families to seek experts help if they think that their child has ADHD or another learning disability. Unfortunately, Lisa's story is not unusual in terms of a late diagnosis. Boys with ADHD are three times more likely to be diagnosed. It's often because the behaviours that present in girls with ADHD are more accepted by families. On average, girls are diagnosed 5 years later than boys are, and in some cases, aren't diagnosed at all.

While he is probably best known for his role of Arthur 'Fonzie' Fonzarrelli on the 70's sitcom Happy Days, Henry Winkler has a career that has spanned over 50 years. He's appeared and starred in Arrested Development, Parks and Recreation, and Barry (he was awarded his first Emmy for his role as Gene Cousineau in 2018.) When he was 31, Henry was diagnosed with dyslexia. When he took his step son in to get tested and evaluated for dyslexia. "At the age of 31, I found out that ...I wasn't stupid, that wasn't lazy, that I had something with a name," he says when discussing his diagnosis, "It gave me fight. It gave me understanding that it doesn't matter. There is not one road to get where you want to go. There is your road." Henry Winkler is also the best selling author of the Hank Zipzer series. Together with his co-author, Lin Oliver, they created the Hank Zipzer series about the high spirited and funny adventures of a boy with a learning difference. The pair produced 29 Hank Zipzer books and became New York Times best selling authors. When he talks about the message of the series and why thinks it resonates with those with and without learning differences Winkler says, "There is greatness in every child and their job is to figure out what this is, dig it out, and give it to the world". Henry Winkler continues to be an activist and inspire those of all ages with Dyslexia and other learning differences.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a euro-developmental disorder that is characterized by inattention, excessive activity and impulsivity, which are otherwise not appropriate for a person's age. Individuals with ADHD are often misdiagnosed. ADHD conservatively occurs in 4% of adults and 5% of children worldwide. ADHD is the most common disorder that co-exists with learning disabilities, but is not considered a learning disability. Many individuals who have ADH...D also have a learning disability. If there are academic difficulties, assessment for an LD is important. Interested in learning more about ADHD? Join us for The Right to Learn; the Power to Achieve on October 17, 2020!
