Deadline is fast approaching for nominations for the National Inclusive Education Awards for 2021! Inclusive education is about how we develop and design our l...earning environments - schools, classrooms, programs and activities - so that all students learn and participate together. It is based on the firm belief, and on real experience, that all students have value and can learn in regular classrooms alongside students their own age. Inclusion also means that our schools help develop positive relationships and mutual respect between all students. Full details including the nomination form are available on our website below.

Parents, have you thought about executive functioning in this way? The difference between using the skills during the school day and learning from home is interesting. "When your child is in school, they are constantly using their executive function skills. They are putting effort into maintaining their attention on work, focusing on teachers, and using self-regulation skills to keep their body calm. Picture your child moving through their classes during a typical (pre-COVID...) school day. Now imagine what would happen if you were standing in the back of the classroom, prompting them whenever you felt they were off task, not paying attention, or getting distracted. Would your presence distract them, make them self-conscious, and/or possibly make them less likely to participate? Would you want your parent standing in the back of your classroom monitoring you all day?" https://bit.ly/3mi1uUl

Learning Disabilities Association of Alberta is proud to present the online version of the Right to Read course. Right to Read is a program developed by a committee of psychologists and reading specialists to help identify and support children with reading difficulties in their early school years, as well as for children whose first language is not English. This course will teach you how to screen for deficits in fundamental reading skills: oral language, phonological skills,... and print-based skills involved in early reading and then provides interventions to support growth in these areas. The Right to Read course is designed for practicing teachers, tutors, and homeschoolers. The LDAA has partnered with Foothills Academy Society to offer the online version of this course, created to be flexible for professionals who have busy lifestyles, with a learning platform that is open 24/7 and can be accessed in the comfort of your own home. You work on the course at your own pace within the 4-month window that the course is open. https://bit.ly/37ggOwr

Teachers - this is a great free webinar! "In this free on-demand webinar, Dr. David Kilpatrick, author of Essentials of Assessing, Preventing, and Overcoming Reading Difficulties, will discuss how and why highly developed PA skills (i.e., phonemic proficiency) are a characteristic of skilled readers, whether a student is taught it or not. By contrast, struggling readers do not develop these skills without direct intervention. Watch this webinar to learn the key factors that link phonological skills and word-level reading."
