From the Office of the Fire Marshal: A very concerning trend - Ontario has recorded 50 fire fatalities from January to March of this year. This is up from 36 fatalities in the same time period last year. These tragedies serve as a reminder to install/maintain working smoke alarms in your home. Fire crews have just cleared the scene of a large grass fire of approximately 5 acres of land burned at Highway 401 & Highbury Ave. At approximately 5:30 p.m. London Fire Dispatchers received multiple 911 calls reporting a grass fire that was quickly spreading. LFD responded with multiple units and 3 tankers and had the fire under control at approximately 6:40 p.m. Crews continued to extinguish hot spots and smouldering trees until fire was deemed out at approximately 7:40 p....m. Quick work from fire crews kept the fire from spreading to Peterbilt Truck Centre and they cut off the fire from getting into the Buchanan Electrical Substation. Great work by crews & fire dispatchers on this call - on a particularly busy afternoon with multiple incidents and calls coming in a short span of time. The LFD cautions people not to discard lit cigarettes out of car windows especially in dry conditions. Thank you to those who called this incident in to 911. With more Londoners working/studying from home we are re-posting a reminder to never charge your electronic devices on soft surfaces. The first image shows a mattress that had a laptop charging on it. The battery overheated & the result was significant fire & smoke damage to the property. Second image is the remnants of the laptop. (*photos from a LFD Fire Investigation*). Last image ...our advice! Never charge electronic devices on a soft surface.
