Today Mark was called out on a service call. Heavy snow had slid down a metal roof and bent the mast for the service. NB Power was called and they had turned off the power. So, he needed to go. It was necessary for him to go up onto the roof. The roof being metal and after testing it, it felt dry and secure but he slipped and down he came with a ten foot fall off of the edge of the roof, wishing he'd fall into a snowbank but the deck was well cleared of snow! Why am I tellin...g you this? If the customer had not hired a reputable contractor with Work Safe NB coverage, SHE WOULD BE 100% RESPONSIBLE FINANCIALLY for him, his loss of work, any medical expenses etc. The average "man on the street" has no idea that they are responsible for this if they hire a person working "out of the trunk of their car," or even if the company is small enough to opt out of having to carry Work Safe NB coverage. In fact, currently, we are small enough, as far as how many people we have working, we could opt out but we haven't because we pride ourselves with not only Work Safe NB coverage but with adequate insurance should our work or men cause any damage to any of our customers homes. We have not needed it for over 30 years but we are covered. The moral of this story is make sure you ask for proof of both Work Safe NB and Liability Insurance before allowing anyone to work on your home. We do large contracts for contractors whom we have done work for, for years. They ask for photocopied proof of both these insurances any and every time we bid on a job, even though we have 30 years of work history with some of them. Don't be embarrassed to ask. Mark had no intention of falling off a roof this morning. He was being careful. We still don't know how this may affect him in days to come. But, one thing we know, our customer can rest easy knowing she called, LD Wheaton and Sons Electrical, and we are fully covered by Work Safe NB and she does not have to give the accident a second thought except maybe to pray that he'll be feeling better soon.
