Once the location of the Chisolm Industries manufacturing plant where radios and televisions were created for human connection and now the location for families to grow and engage. The transformation of 50 Electronic Ave has begun with the Panatch group development and the area metamorphosizes from empty industrial land, into the foil for connection and community. The land witnessed my created memories as I interact with her daily and now I witness her transformation as she... shapes my experience. I was hesitant to declare this but after spending the day with her alongside me while I prepped some new canvases... she has arrived :) Would I previously have chosen such bold yellows and orange for the piece? Probably not but things have changed and I can’t imagine why I would be spending time in the studio if it were not to continue the journey to discover the paintings that I want to see in the world. Here we are today. I am finally understanding what she wants to be and where she wants to go, just not sure how to get there. She wants to play with yellow and green and still have a solid, monumental presence that is reminiscent of construction.... The greens and yellows are here but the presence is missing. She still sits as a 2 dimensional object. The dark bank of trees on the right is swallowing the eye and when you do leave it, you long for an extension of the Green diagonal to carry you into the rest of the painting. The sky is beautiful but the horizon line prevents you from getting there and the quietness of the sky depletes any presence that does exist in the work. Where to go next? Scrape away some paint and see if there is a new conversation, build the green diagonal and make some bold marks to engage the sky with the rest of the piece and let the marks intentionally interact with the dark bank of trees. Here she is. The detail that you saw in the previous post was from that area to the left with the vertical white. A few more changes were made today to keep your eye moving into unpredictable areas. So this is where we are at the moment. Yellow has made her appearance, the brushstrokes are holding onto their energy and the image is steadily developing. The struggle is understanding where my motivations and the painting’s motivations can merge and also understanding exactly where the painting wants to go.... The clues so far are the darks that are out of balance, the cool colours that are taking the painting away from the general warmth that the yellow can lend and the brushstrokes which need some taming in some areas. A nice juicy bit of complex brushstrokes. Yes, that is yellow that you see. This piece was originally one of those paintings that just flow from the brush, an invigorating experience. I was happy to luxuriate in the easy joy until yellow got me again :) She hasn’t been reworked completely but the sky moved from white to a glowing yellow that has now been weaved through the entire piece. She doesn’t look like much yet but she is the reason that I am itching to get into the studio this morning. Sometimes. you work all month and nothing and then in the hour before you lay down your brushes... this happens. Yes, it is very early days yet but there is so much promise and the brushwork is so strong in this new 48 x 60 piece. So many exciting choices lay ahead.... We have many, many, many hours in front of us and of course I am already obsessing about when the yellow will join us . She would be great with the suggested orange crane in the foreground.
