Last week was Sloyd No.5 and we decided to go on a spring camp out. This was more of a Bushcraft based lesson and was lots of fun. We practiced whittling, camp cooking, staying warm in below freezing temperatures and much more.
For Sloyd lesson No. 4 a few weeks ago we went through a few antique stores looking for some tools that we could use in our workshop. The tools we found needed a good dose of elbow grease and some TLC but they are now in good working condition. We learned a lot together and look forward to all the projects we will build with them.
Today was Sloyd lesson 3. We needed an indoor lesson so we started to learn to tie knots. We started with the Overhand Knot and Stop Knot. That was a mistake because they then proceeded to tie me up to a pole so good I couldn’t get away and blindfolded me. Then we started working on the Canadian Jam Knot.
In week two we continued our drilling lesson and added some saw skills and carving skills. We split a Birch log, drilled the holes, cut the legs, carved them to size, sanded and planed the seat and then assembled.
In week one of Sloyd we learned about drilling tools. We learned how to use a brace and bit, scotch augers, power drills and the drill press. We made antler whistles for our project.
