From the mouth of babes. We’re on our own Spring Break over here. (The benefits of learning at home - picking your own vacation times. ) We’ve been reading a ton together. Today my daughter caught me off guard while I was reading. We do voices for the characters in books around here. (Are we alone? Do you?) When I was making the voice for one of the officers that stopped to chat with Nancy Drew, my voice went straight into a gruff, low, male-intentioned voice. ... Mom, how do you know the officer is a boy and not a girl? I don’t. I assumed. And here I thought I was so equal-opportunity and gender stereotypically aware. We talked about it. I thanked her for bringing that question to me. I hadn’t thought about it, and appreciated her knowledge reminding me that officers aren’t automatically male. She’s right. It could absolutely be a female. Of course, in Nancy Drew’s time, things might not have been as equal as today, but carrying that on doesn’t help. But if I am aware of adding more female voices to traditionally male-dominated fields, and switch up the pronouns some times, maybe I can change the way print media plays into influencing gender roles.
