BC/Yukon Command of the Royal Canadian Legion 19.11.2020

In a Facebook post Friday, Royal Canadian Legion Branch 217 said the unidentified member tested positive last week. The member was masked and had been taking all the appropriate precautions. We encourage all our comrades to monitor for symptoms and get tested. Our hall will remain closed until Interior Health provides us permission to reopen. https://bit.ly/36P63zS

Charlotte Cederholm, President at Legion Branch #259 writes a short history of the branch in Vavenby. "...At the start, meetings were held in the local school, then in a one-room cabin that was on skids to be moved when the property was acquired." https://www.clearwatertimes.com//a-brief-history-of-the-r/

VIDEO: Rotunda Ceremony at the BC Legislature Public Service Branch 127’s Rotunda Ceremony has a long history - it started in 1938 and was called the Civil Service Memorial Ceremony and held at 5:00 pm. It was changed in 1945 to 11:00 am on the last working day immediately prior to Remembrance Day and takes place inside the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia, in the Rotunda. This is the first year it could have been cancelled due to COVID-19, but it went ahead with a ...minimal number of participants and was available on live-stream via YouTube. This ceremony has a Remembrance program similar to most. An MLA has always attended to place a wreath of behalf of the government but in recent years, that traditional honour has changed to the Premier or Deputy Premier. This year, Premier John Horgan attended. Usually, there is also a choir present but not in 2020. Merl Fulton sang Amazing Grace as a soloist in place of the choir. Following the ceremony, the Province usually hosts a reception that everyone looks forward to. After the reception, people come to Branch 127 (located behind the Parliament Buildings) for further socializing and renewing their memberships. In the past, it was an impressive sight to see veterans marching in full dress and lining around the Rotunda, 6 deep. The audience included public servants, branch members and partners, MLAs and the public. Now, the numbers who can march are very small and chairs are provided for them. Those who attend in person have always expressed how moved they are by the short but touching ceremony. This is the first year the ceremony has been videotaped for live-streaming and available on YouTube afterward. It is hoped the videotaping will continue even when things get back to normal. The ceremony was recorded here, live, on the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia YouTube channel: https://youtu.be/lMPC-Q5IXhw

Two weeks ago, President Isabelle Hammer of Branch #134 received a cheque from Stan Grenda for the first installation of pin cheques. Stan is a retired CPO2 Chief Hull Tech, designed two beautiful Veterans pins one for the RCN and one for the RCAF. Stan is legally blind, but he wanted to give back something the the Military Veterans and also help the Malahat Legion out. This was a fundraiser for the Legion Branch #134. This project was all approved by DND Director of History... and Heritage (DHH) for the use of their logo for both RCN and RCAF Veteran pin. This first and second batch of RCN pins were sold out in less than 24 hours. There were 600 RCN pins produced and 200 RCAF pins. We still have a few RCN Veteran’s pins left. RCAF pin are sold out and no more will be made. Cost is $25.00 per pin for this limited addition. All proceeds are going to the Malahat Legion Branch 134. They are available off our website www.malahatlegion.ca. Complete the form first. Payment options are available on this page. We would like to thank everyone who ordered a Veteran pin and helped support our Legion. This will be a collectors’ item as no more will be made. It is wonderful to see our Veterans step up to help keep our Legions open during these trying times.
