Today is Inspire Your Heart with Art Day. Fort Langley is a place where we see many examples of art integrated into culture, both historically and present-day. ...In the past, craftsmanship stemmed from necessity and the maker’s creativity. We see beautiful examples of art in the Indigenous basketry and carvings, the beadwork and finger-weaving of the Métis, and the barrel-making at the fort. Many of these art forms are being renewed today. Métis artist, Lisa Shepherd, Metis Artist, crafted a beautiful moss bag, now on display in the Big House. A moss bag is a traditional-style Métis baby carrier that would have used sphagnum moss as absorbent material to keep a baby dry and comfortable. Lisa explained that with Fort Langley’s custom-made moss bag, she created the beading to represent local plants.
