DON’T TRY TO STRADDLE A TURTLE ON THE ROAD WITH YOUR VEHICLE ! When approaching a turtle on the road in your vehicle, especially a Snapping Turtle, it is NEVER ...a good idea to try and straddle and slowly drive over the turtle. A Snapping Turtle cannot retract into its shell like all other Ontario turtles, as a means of 'protection'. The 'plastron' (lower shell) is too small for them to retract into. The Snapping turtle will Instead defend itself by REARING UP, extend their long neck and lunge to SNAP as it is their only means of defence. The consequence of the turtle SNAPPING UP under the vehicle as it passes over them results in their getting caught in the undercarriage of the vehicle, often times rolling them over causing extensive injury or death. Even at slow speeds the result is usually a cracked carapace or plastron, broken jaw and limb and head trauma. Please STOP if it's SAFE to do so and help the turtle cross the road in the direction it is going. Even if you successfully straddle a turtle, most likely with consequence, we can guarantee you the vehicle behind you will not. Turtles are on the road at this time of year because they are gravid (egg carrying) females looking for a place to dig and bury their eggs. It will take 60 years to replace just ONE turtle who has not survived her road trauma. 60 YEARS ! All five species found in the Kingston area are at risk of extinction. Second only to habitat loss, road mortality is the biggest reason for the decline in their turtle populations. Smaller turtles like the Midland Painted Turtle, will often stay in the middle of the road like a sitting target or 'scurry' across the road, both actions often resulting in life threatening injuries or their demise. So please don’t straddle a turtle on the road and LOOK AHEAD ! SLOW DOWN ! GIVE THEM A BRAKE !

Cataraqui Conservation has issued a Watershed Conditions Statement Water Safety today in response to a significant weather system crossing the Province. Expe...cted rainfall amounts are uncertain, but forecasts are calling for 35-75 mm from this event before it wraps up on May 1, 2020. Higher amounts are possible. A somewhat drier than average April, so far, has resulted in below average creek flows. The forecasted rainfall is expected to cause significant increases to current levels and flows. Widespread flooding is NOT expected at this time. However, localized inundation of low-lying areas is possible. If you witness flooding and/or require assistance your first point of contact is the local municipality. For full details visit www.crca.ca/news
