I thought I’d share with you a few of the newest additions to the Archives. I just finished de-framing and digitizing this amazing collection of early twentieth century broadsides advertising local events in the Odessa area. These posters were all printed by The Snider Press, a local printer. These delicate broadsides would have been pasted outside and you can see from the edges of the Sugar Social poster that at one time it was a vivid red, to catch the eyes of passersby. Br...oadsides such as these help describe the social lives of the community at the time, while expressing the typographic style of the period. They’re such neat pieces of design, and somehow the irregularities and off-kilter lines make them even more pleasing. There are many broadsides here at the Archives, full of information about what folks were up to a century ago, just waiting for you to use in your L&A research! #LAndACountyMuseum #LAndACounty #HistoryLivesHere #KingstonMuseums #MuseumsOntario #MuseumTakeOver #InternTakeOver #PhotoOfTheDay #Collection #Photo #AskACurator #AskAnArchivist #MuseSocial #MuseTech #MuseumVisit #MuseumsUnite #History #Museum #HistoryMuseum #MuseumfromHome #HowDoYouMuseum #CdnHistory #MuseumLover #LoveHistory #Heritage #MuseumLife #Archives

Did You Know? Learning to sew was part of a proper Victorian girl’s education, they were trained to make clothing and bedding for their future family and home. The idea behind a sampler is just that it depicts a sample of that sewing skill set that young girls were taught stitching styles, colours, button holes, and knots often depicted through poetry, alphabet, and images of animals. You can often spot the year the sampler was created and who its creator was along with... their age. Victorian samplers have found their way into most museum collections. They are a terrific example of domestic life from their time, often lending itself to discover it's hidden geneology, and these once utilitarian training pieces now serve as magnificent works of art and beauty for most to enjoy. As part of the Museum’s Fa-La-La-Llama Holiday Challenges, this week, museum staff created a cross-stitch festive llama. Photos of this challenge were featured on yesterday’s post, we can say without a doubt that this is incredibly time consuming and difficult work. Our little Llama took 7 hours (for me anyways) to sew. The number of hours within a sampler would be many times over this, often working in poor lighting, smoky fireplaces, and working with less than ideal tools (by today’s standards) think- scissors, textile backing, threads, hoops etc.... Please enjoy these tremendous examples (along with some tatting samples too) from our Lennox and Addington Collection. Can you spot the creator’s name or year on some of them?

Our staff Falalala LAMA challenge for this week was to learn how to cross-stitch. What we learned in addition to the beautiful new art form was that it took much longer then we had anticipated but was so wonderfully relaxing. We spoke in length about the amount of time it would take to create some of the beautiful samplers we have in our collection which led us to pull some out and showcase them. Check back tomorrow here on Facebook, to marvel over the amazing intricate pat...terns and art pieces that have been created with this art form. For now you can enjoy our holiday Lamas created by your Museum and Archives staff. #FridayFun #LAndACountyMuseum #LandACounty #kingstonmuseums #HistoryLivesHere
