On January 10, 2020, IRCC updated instructions on spousal sponsorship applications that are submitted by a sponsor or a foreign national who is 18 years old or older at the time of submitting the application but was under 18 at the time of marriage. Both spouses must be at least 18 years of age at the time of submitting their sponsorship application. This applies even if the spouse married at a younger age. For example, a person who was married at 16 is eligible to be sponsored as a spouse when they turn 18.
