The following lakes are under a blue green algae advisory: Lac Sante Lac St. Anne Moose Lake Islet Lake... About Blue Green Algae If there is a blue green algae advisory for a body of water you plan on visiting, take these precautions: Avoid all contact with blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) blooms. If contact occurs, wash with tap water as soon as possible. Do not swim or wade (or allow your pets to swim or wade) in any areas where blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) is visible. Do not feed whole fish or fish trimmings from this lake to your pets. Consider limiting human consumption of whole fish and fish trimmings from this lake, as it is known that fish may store toxins in their liver. (People can safely consume fish fillets from this lake). Blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) is naturally occurring, and often become visible when weather conditions are calm. Appearing like scum, grass clippings, fuzz or globs on the surface of water, blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) can be blue-green, greenish-brown, brown, and/or pinkish-red, and often smell musty or grassy. For more information please visit Alberta Health Services at: https://www.albertahealthservices.ca/news/bga.aspx

For those of you who have been working and/or staying at home, please keep in mind that once you start heading back to the work place, this can be a potentially stressful transition for your pet. Try to gradually resume your pets normal feeding and exercise routine prior to heading back to work. If possible, try to make sure you leave the house for gradually increasing periods of time so your pet learns to adjust to being on their own during the day again. If your pet is potentially showing any anxiety signs please contact us. We can help with advice, supplements, pheromone collars, sprays, and diffusers.

Over the next several weeks we will gradually be accepting appointments for routine exams, vaccines and bloodwork and will also resume our reminder program within the next few weeks. For your pets appointment, please continue to call us upon arrival and a team member will arrange retrieval of him/her at your vehicle or the front vestibule. Since your pets have also been social distancing, they are enthusiastic to visit us especially with our wide options of treats! We kno...w these measures will be temporary and will continue to monitor the situation as our team works carefully to ensure everyones safety and health. Please note, if your pet is in contact with a household member who is ill, diagnosed with COVID-19 or awaiting testing or are in self-isolation as per Alberta Healths self-assessment please let us know. Our team then will decide if we can safely post-pone their visit, should be assessed with a telemedicine appointment or require a hospital appointment. Please visit our website for up to date information about our hospital! www.lessardvdet.com

A COVID-19 update for pet health: We have been following Dr. Scott Weese, a Canadian veterinarian, specializing in public health and here is a summary of his advice with a link for more details. Please remember, if youre sick, stay away from animals just like you would other people. If you have COVID-19 and have been around your pets, keep your pets inside and away from other people. While the risk of transmission to or from a pet is low, we dont want an exposed pet tracki...ng this virus out of the household (just like we dont want an infected person doing that). If your pet needs any medical attention as we have said before please contact Lessard Callingwood Veterinary Hospital and we will utilize telemedicine to help. A cat in Belgium, owned by a person with COVID-19, has tested positive for the virus. This is potentially a case of human to animal transmission NOT the other way around. If youre worried about getting COVID-19, worry about your human contacts, not your pets. Keep pets away from high risk people, but otherwise, your risk is from exposure to people, not your pet. https://www.wormsandgermsblog.com//covid-19-in-a-cat-belg/

Here are some ideas to keep your dog entertained while we are practicing social distancing.Taking your puppy for walk around the neighborhood is a great idea but avoid high risk areas such as dog parks if your puppy is not up to date on their vaccinations. If your puppy is due then please contact the clinic to arrange an appointment to ensure they are protected! https://www.myfantasticfriend.com//time-is-of-the-essenc/

COVID-19 and how we are preparing: Lessard Callingwood Veterinary Hospital is dedicated to ensuring the health and safety of our clients, patients and our vet care team. Our hospital follows strict cleaning, disinfecting and sanitizing protocols, however in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, our hospital is taking additional cleaning measures especially in areas with high volume contact. We may be adjusting our schedule and hours depending on the availability of our vet care te...am and will certainly post changes on our Facebook and Google page to keep you updated but if unsure please call. For the safety of the public and our team, if you or someone you are in contact with is not feeling well and/or have recent travel history we ask you not to come into the hospital and please call 780-481-5678 or email our team at [email protected]. We can discuss with you how we can help your pet if in need of care and arrange home delivery of food and medications. We have many options! Please call or email! Can COVID-19 infect pets? Currently there is limited evidence that companion animals can be infected with SARS-Cov2(virus that causes COVID-19) and no evidence that pet dogs or cats can be a source of infection to other animals or to humans. Only one dog in Hong Kong did have a weak positive to COVID-19 and was not exhibiting any symptoms and came from a household affected with COVID-19 virus. There have been no other documented cases but this is a rapidly evolving situation and information will be updated as it becomes available. In the meantime, if you and/or family member is experiencing potential symptoms of COVID19(coughing, sneezing, fever) the recommendations from WSAVA are to limit your contact with your pet, including petting, snuggling, being kissed or licked and sharing food. If you must care for your pet or be around animals while you are sick, wash your hand before and after you interact with pets and wear a facemask. If your pet has potentially been exposed to someone with COVID-19 and is potentially in need of medical attention for any reason please call the hospital and let us know of the situation so we can decide if your pet needs an exam and if so, prepare an isolated area for examination and have the appropriate testing. The current coronavirus vaccine in dogs is for the enteric(GI) form only and since the new respiratory COVID-19 form is a distinctly different variant there is no evidence it will provide any protection for COVID-19 and therefore is not recommended to use. Lessard Callingwood Veterinary Hospital thanks you in advance for your patience and understanding as we work together to ensure the best care for your pet.

As the temperatures continue to drop, please be sure to minimize your pets exposure to the cold. Caring for Your Pups Paws in the Winter: One of the biggest t...hreats to healthy paw pads is the salt/sand used to melt ice on driveways, roads and sidewalks. Prolonged contact can lead to chemical burns on dog paws. If your dog is limping by end of a walk, deicing products (or the cold) may be hurting their feet. Try to keep your dog off the salty sidewalk (think grass or snow) whenever possible. Another threat from deicers is ingestion. Dogs may lick their paws and ingest deicing salts. To prevent your dog from ingesting deicing salts, wipe your dogs paws when coming back inside.
