Comments on bill 4 from Jason Stewart, registered professional forester, landowner and rural Nova Scotian. "I believe the public perceives this to be mainly a ...forestry issue when in fact it affects anyone who uses land for any purpose especially those of us that live and play in rural areas." "Adding a BMZ could potentially cut off or fragment hiking trails to waterfalls, ATV trails or limit activities in provincial parks and beaches." We currently have over 18 acts that regulate what we do on land in NS including Conservation Act, Crown Lands Act, Endangered Species Act, Environment Act, Forest Enhancement Act, Forest Act in addition there are Acts that control what we do around brooks, lakes and oceans such as Water Act, Coastal Protection Act, Fisheries Act and Oceans Act." "The purpose states that the Act is to provide for stewardship, conservation and sustainable use and governance of biodiversity in the province. I think this is a noble goal that we should try to achieve as a province, but I wonder could it be done by adding to the regulations or modifying acts that we currently have in place?" "It is my wish that the NS Department of Lands and Forestry consider shelving the Biodiversity Act and consider amending existing legislation to reflect the protection of biodiversity in the province. If this is not possible, I think at a minimum, the Biodiversity Act should be amended with the most recent changes including regulations provided to all stakeholders in their entirety before going forward for the third reading of the bill." Throughout history wood has always been a vital resource. Aside from its use in fuel, in cooking, for paper and as a construction material, forests play a huge part in maintaining the environmental balance of the planet. Though by its nature fluid and constantly changing to meet varying ecological challenges, a sustainably managed forest is one designed to balance the demand for resources against the health and vitality of the forest. This means carefully managing and regulating the forest and woodlands to meet human needs without damaging their overall health and habitat. At the end of the day we all have the same interest and goal for or forest . With your help and contributions we will successfully maintain and manage our woodlands for years to come .
