2020 has been a difficult year for all of us, but we are hopeful that better days lie ahead. From all of us at LGA, we wish our friends, families, clients and collaborators a safe, restorative, and very happy holiday. Our studio will be closed Monday, December 21 - Friday, January 1, reopening Monday, January 4. We can't wait to see all of you in 2021!
A great interview with the very talented Alfred Waugh, who we have partnered with on U of T's Indigenous House Project. https://www.cbc.ca//how-this-indigenous-architect-designs-
"By the end of this year, 100 detached residential units, each with a footprint of 1,700 square feet or less, will be added to Toronto’s housing stock. That may sound like a minor accomplishment considering the city’s ongoing affordable housing crisis. In reality, it’s a notable benchmark for the long-awaited rise of laneway housing." Check out this great overview of the rise of laneway housing in Toronto, featuring some of our favorite laneway projects! https://www.architectatwork.ca//filling-in-the-gaps-toront

Congratulations to LGA Associate Drew Adams, winner of the 2020 @RAIC_IRAC Emerging Architect Award! Drew's dedication, perspective, and enthusiasm have made a fantastic addition to our work and our future. We look forward to a time when we can all be together to celebrate. . . : @2spacephoto
"There’s no daily repartee of beautiful, surprising, or even challenging experiences enriching one’s day. There’s no surprising moment walking down the street that makes you think about something differently," writes LGA architectural partners' Janna Levitt.

With multiple storeys and split levels, these small spaces feel like they have room to spare. Featuring Superkül and LGA architectural partners.
Working remotely and #SocialDistancing may be an adjustment for many of us, but it is a crucial step in helping to stop the spread of COVID-19. Though we may be apart from one another, we can still work together to create networks of community and engagement.
LGA has joined many workplaces in shifting to a remote working setup. We remain fully operational, and our team is accessible by phone or email for any questions or concerns our clients and collaborators may have. We hope you’re healthy, comfortable and safe.
Let’s get a bunch of creative people together - and solve it. - LGA Partner Dean Goodman, as quoted in this great account of the building code reservations that prevent many laneway homes from being built in Toronto. http://spacing.ca///lorinc-burning-down-the-laneway-house/
We are so excited to be working with PROCESS and Plant Architects on a new master-plan for the Evergreen Brick Works. This great article by Alex Bozikovic explores some of the amazing possibilities for that site, and for the Don Valley as a whole. https://www.theglobeandmail.com//article-the-don-valley-s/

Facilitating the construction of housing on the more than 300 kilometres of laneways in Toronto is one of many strategies to combat the critical shortage of housing supply in our city. This article from the CBC, featuring LGA partner Dean Goodman, outlines some of the regulatory roadblocks that those interested in building laneway houses face. Together, we can work towards a more streamlined approvals process for this type of housing stock in Toronto. Stay tuned to CBC Radio and tonight's news segment for more! https://www.cbc.ca//laneway-home-advocates-hope-for-more-a

Great news! In follow up from the case made to the OBCC by LGA architectural partners in December, the Commission has allowed their client to use automatic spri...nklers in his laneway house project in order to get around the rule of 45m maximum distance to the street and 90m to a fire hydrant. This decision applies specifically to this project - for now. In about four months, the OBCC will issue an official written version of the decision. Once that’s done, the City and the Fire Department need to sign a new memorandum of understanding. Only then can it be more widely applicable. In the meantime, this decision certainly helps as a positive precedent for other projects that are going through similar issues when making their case! Congratulations, LGA architectural partners! And great article, John Lorinc! (To read the full article you need to be a Globe and Mail subscriber. Also, our very own Tom is included in it!)
In mid-December 2019, David Hine and LGA Architectural Partners appeared before the Ontario Building Code Commission to argue that the current requirements for a 45 m. maximum distance from the street to the front door of the laneway unit and 90 m. to a fire hydrant should not be applied to a Part 9 laneway house. This article by John Lorinc in the Globe and Mail sums up to positive results of that hearing, as well as the hurdles that still remain for laneway housing in Toronto. Thank you all for your support. Let's continue to advocate for more diverse modes of housing supply in our growing city! https://www.theglobeandmail.com//article-toronto-clears-b/
Clever #design and 120 empty shipping containers made an empty patch of land at Front and Bathurst one of our favourite spots in the city. Check out why LGA architectural partners' stackt is our Public Space of the Year.
This great article by John Lorinc in Corporate Knights lays out some crucial sustainable strategies architects and builders must consider as we enter a new decade (with some advice from LGA's own Drew Adams!) https://www.corporateknights.com//five-green-building-shi/
