Earlier this week, we had the opportunity to visit Gibson-Neill Memorial Elementary School in Fredericton for a musical adventure. Four groups of students enrolled in the Sistema NB program, offered by the New Brunswick Youth Orchestra / Orchestre des jeunes du Nouveau-Brunswick, delivered some fantastic performances. What a show! The Sistema NB program aims to inspire children and youth to achieve their full potential through learning and performing orchestral music. Congratulations to all youth, instructors, and organizers across the province who are involved in this great initiative.

Today, we recognize the International Day of la Francophonie. This year’s theme is Femmes francophones, femmes résilientes (Francophone women, resilient women). The Organisation international de la Francophonie (OIF), comprised of 88 member states and governments including New Brunswick, is dedicated to the promotion of the French language and cultural and linguistic diversity throughout the world. Let’s be proud of New Brunswick’s inclusion in this organization, of bilingualism, and of Acadian heritage in our province.

Remembrance Day is a solemn day for all Canadians. In 2020, we marked the 75th anniversary of the end of the Second World War. While large gatherings around our cenotaphs or in our community halls are discouraged today, there is no better time to pause and reflect on the sacrifices of the women and men who have served in the Canadian Armed Forces over the years. This year, more than ever, many of us are suffering from the effects of social isolation. Let’s take a moment to reach out to our veterans to thank them for their service, while remembering those who are no longer with us. We must honour these courageous Canadians to ensure that the memory of their selfless actions is preserved for future generations. We will remember them.

Continuing the series in the lead-up to the 50th anniversary of the tabling of the report of the Royal Commission on the Status of Women in Canada, also known as the Bird Commission, we will be highlighting a few individuals who have contributed towards the advancement of gender equality in New Brunswick. These three New Brunswickers have fought for women’s rights to be recognized through the legal system and have created strong networks that advance gender equality: Madelein...e Delaney-LeBlanc, OC: For Ms. Delaney-LeBlanc, the Bird Commission marked the start of a lifelong commitment to advocate for women’s right; she has been doing so for more than 50 years. She played a key role in seeing gender equality entrenched in the Canadian Constitution. As founding chair of New Brunswick’s Advisory Council on the Status of Women, Ms. Delaney-LeBlanc has devoted herself to improving the status of women in terms of equality, financial autonomy and social respect. Condemning violence against women, she helped to establish shelters for victims. This champion of social justice continues to volunteer with numerous groups in her community. Hon. Sandra Lovelace Nicholas, OC: Sandra Lovelace Nicholas has been a driving force in securing rights and fighting injustices on behalf of Indigenous women in Canada. Challenging discriminatory provisions of the Indian Act, which deprived Indigenous women of their status when they married non-Aboriginals, she was instrumental in bringing the case before the United Nations Human Rights Commission and lobbying for the 1985 legislation which reinstated the rights of First Nation women and their children in Canada. In 1990, she was awarded the Order of Canada, and in 1992, she received the Governor General's Award in Commemoration of the Persons Case, which is given to someone who promotes equality for women and girls. Her pride, strength, and determination have made her a role model for all women. She has been representing New Brunswick in the Senate since 2005. Mathilda Blanchard: As a union leader, an activist, and a social justice advocate, Mathilda Blanchard led fish-processing factory workers of the Acadian Peninsula through several struggles for improved working conditions from the 1960s to the 1990s. She founded the Union canadienne de l’industrie des pêches et des travailleurs affiliés, which grew to comprise over 10,000 workers. Ms. Blanchard, although unsuccessful in her bid, was the first woman to seek the leadership of a political party in Canada when she entered the New Brunswick Progressive-Conservative Party’s leadership race in 1969.
