Divorce and Toddlers Daddy Mommy... hearing your little ones call you daddy and mommy for the 1st time is the absolute best experience. By toddler age, children are usually very bonded to their parents and have a unique relationship with each. ... So...how do Judges typically divide each parent’s time? In an earlier post, we addressed divorce and newborns/infants. Unlike with newborns and infants, judges typically are of the view that toddlers can go longer periods of time in between visits with each parent. Judges typically do not like schedules that have a lot of back and forth. They often state that children need consistency, stability and routine. Parents are discouraged from creating schedules that treat a child’s schedule like a ping pong game. A toddler needs to be able to identify his or her home. Having them live out of a suitcase and going back-and-forth between two homes is typically not viewed to be in their best interests. Toddlers are so much fun and have so much love to give. They love their mommies and their daddies. Creating a safe and stable schedule for them to begin their young lives will go a long way to ensuring they become productive members of society and reach their full potential

Divorce and Infants Do you have a newborn or infant and are going through a separation or divorce? This happens! It’s a reality for many families. So does it matter that the child is a baby? YES!... Handling a separation or divorce involving a newborn or infant presents a level of complexity not seen when the children are toddlers, school age, or teenagers. Infants have different needs than older siblings. Gradual access is typically implemented; and if the parents can’t agree on that, the Court will likely order it. Gradual means regular and frequent contact and starting off with short visits and adding more and more time over specific periods of time. Overnights are typically the goal but don’t happen right out of the gate in most cases. Many judges are of the view that newborns and infants especially need contact and the love and care of both parents on a regular and frequent basis. Bonds need to formed and maintained through regular contact. Concerns like breastfeeding are taken into account with the focus being always on what is in the best interests of the baby. What they need comes first! They’re new, delicate, needy and demanding but innocent and perfect and just want to be loved, cuddled and nurtured. We have a significant amount of experience with gradual access arrangements and scenarios. Every family is different. We have a long list of possible solutions. Don’t struggle with the concept!
