We brought Dumplings making, a long-held Lunar New Year ritual, to school Dumplings ( jiaozi) are a traditional lucky dish that symbolizes prosperity as their shape resembles ancient gold ingots. In Chinese culture, the more dumplings you eat, the more money you'll make in the new year This year, instead of just eating dumplings, we made them from scratch. Staff members prepared the dough and filling, then students took turns to roll out wrappers, scoop the filling ont...o each wrapper and fold the dumplings. The event was so much fun, and the dumplings seemed to taste much better than store-bought ones For dessert, we made Sweet Rice Balls with Black Sesame Filling ( Tangyuan or Yuanxiao) which signify family reunion and togetherness. Yum!

Bannock, anyone? ____ Bannock is a type of flatbreads, usually made from wheat or corn flour, then baked or fried. More than just a staple food, bannock is a cultural icon for Indigenous peoples. ... As Indigenous peoples were removed from their land, and thus their traditional sources of food, the Canadian government supplied them with rations of things such as flour, lard, sugar and eggs. Once a quick and easy meal to be made in the bush, bannock became a necessity to prevent starvation on reserves. Bannock keeps without spoiling for a long time. It’s a source of carbohydrates, and a fulfilling meal. #internationalmindedness #culturalawareness
