Libellula Adornments

I order a whack of semi-precious gemstone beads in November (note: not a very good idea as the shipment was held up by all the Christmas mail sent by shoppers organized enough to send gifts in November ). This is the first item to roll out of the workshop! The gemstones are Amazonite, half of them are polished and the other half are considered frosted. Maillechort anyone? All 3 pairs of these earrings contain components of a silvery looking metal. Maillechort is also known as German Silver, Nickel Silver, Argentan, Albata, and New Silver. It’s important to note however that this metal alloy contains no actual silver. This alloy is commonly used in costume jewellery-making as it gives the look of silver without the cost. It is usually about 60% copper, 20% nickel, and 20% zinc whereas sterling silver is 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% copper. The nickel gives the Maillechort its silvery appearance and the zinc gives it strength. I love using this alloy as I can use a fine gauge to keep the earrings lightweight and it gives the look of silver without the price tag!
