A discovery made by a team of University of Calgary researchers, led by Dr. Morley Hollenberg, has the potential to open doors to new treatments for the approximately 3.4 million Canadians living with diabetes. The team with cooperation across several departments and Institutes recently discovered the mechanism behind how a commonly used diabetes drug, metformin, works to protect the blood vessels. The team’s findings were recently published in the Journal of Molecular Ph...armacology. The discovery has important implications, says Hollenberg. It could potentially lead to the development of metformin-based drugs that work even better. Did you know that about 3,800 Albertan women have a high-risk pregnancy, due to complications brought on by high blood pressure every year? These women are four times more likely to develop chronic high blood pressure, 2.5 times more likely to experience cardiovascular disease and about twice as likely to have a heart attack or die of heart disease. Yet, fewer than 10 per cent of women who have experienced preeclampsia, which can lead to heart, brain and kidney damage, are aw...are they are at risk and many of these women don’t receive follow-up care. Dr. Kara Nerenberg, MD, a University of Calgary clinician-researcher who focuses on caring for women with high blood pressure during and after pregnancy, is working to improve outcomes for women and their babies through her clinical practice, research program and patient advocacy work. She is well regarded nationally for her expertise. She led a pan-Canadian Hypertension in Pregnancy Guideline Committee and holds the Women’s Heart and Brain Health Mid-Career Research Chair supported by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research and Heart & Stroke Foundation. Most recently, she received a Hypertension Canada New Investigator Award for her work. Read more here: https://ucalgary.ca//ucalgary-researcher-honoured-national

Did you know that continuing to take certain prescription medications while acutely ill with communicable diseases like stomach bugs and seasonal flu, can cause severe side effects? According to Adverse Drug Reaction Canada, there are about 200,000 severe drug reactions in Canada annually. Sick day drug events account for more than 1 in 10 of those. These may occur when patients become acutely ill with communicable diseases and they continue taking certain prescription medica...tions which are supposed to be temporarily stopped. Certain classes of drugs, such as those taken by insulin-dependent diabetic patients, can cause severe side effects like acute kidney injury and dangerous low blood sugar levels. A team of University of Calgary researchers including Dr. David Campbell, MD, PhD, is working to create a mobile app to remind patients about which medications they should refrain from taking when sick. To help optimize the app, Campbell and his team are conducting a patient survey with the goal of better understanding patient experiences and needs with sick day medication management. If you are a patient, please consider taking part. See the story below for more information and a link to the patient survey: https://news.ucalgary.ca//ucalgary-researcher-looks-improv

According to a University of Calgary research team led by Dr. Satish Raj, females comprise nearly 94% of POTS patients, yet they experience more diagnostic challenges than their male counterpart with the debilitating disorder. Awareness and recognition of POTS may help reduce the diagnostic challenges in both female and male patients and improve treatment and management for individuals living with this debilitating disorder. About half of heart attacks in women are undetected, as they often present with different symptoms than men, leading to later diagnosis and treatment. Women also have unique considerations that may impact their heart health, yet they have historically been under-represented when it comes to cardiovascular research. Several University of Calgary researchers are working to change that as part of a group of experts creating the Canadian Women's Heart Health Alliance ATLAS on th...e Epidemiology, Diagnosis, and Management of Cardiovascular Disease in Women. When completed, it will provide a science-based update to women’s heart health in Canada, along with the latest ways to treat these conditions. Researcher-clinicians Drs. Kara Nerenberg, Sandra Dumanski and Sofia Ahmed contributed to the latest chapter of the ATLAS, which highlights conditions that increase a woman’s risk of developing cardiovascular disease over her lifespan, such as the age of onset of puberty and menopause, and high-blood pressure conditions in pregnancy like preeclampsia. After saving a second life using CPR techniques in just 18 months, University of Calgary researcher and cardiac surgeon Dr. Corey Adams is urging everyone to learn the technique. Both incidents occurred while Adams and his family randomly came across strangers, Eric McVeigh, 34, and Darrell Parker, then-60, who had suddenly collapsed while enjoying outdoor activities. He later operated on both of the men, effectively saving each of their lives twice. CPR can be done anywhere... and at any time, and it saves lives, he says. Both men are doing well and are happy to be given a second chance at life. Read more at: https://bit.ly/3EOH3bd #CPRmonth #yyc #ucalgary
