TIPS ON HOW TO DEAL WITH SAD Hello everyone. Dr Brad here again and today we are going to talk about seasonal affective disorder (SAD). This is when people feel down and depressed during the winter months. It no surprise there is a lot more anxiety and depression out there due to this whole Covid thing. I have, unfortunately, observed this within my own practice. This is why I want to give you some tips on how you can get out in front of this now, especially if you are the ty...pe to get down during the gloomy winter months. I’d rather you deal with this holistically instead of taking those wicked meds that often times have unfavourable side effects, or at least try these first. First of all, EXERCISE!! Make a commitment with your self to get to the gym a few times per week, or take a yoga class or get out for a walk when the weather is tolerable. The change of scenery and the endorphin release from exercising is a great natural mood elevator. You can also get yourself a sun lamp. You can purchase them affordably on Amazon. Studies show that sun lamps have a positive impact on serotonin production a hormone which has been linked to depression when levels are low. Spinal alignments . these flood your body with endorphins. Endorphins are your feel-good hormones and many people remark that after having an alignment, they feel like they are ‘walking on air.’ So do everything you can to naturally release and flood your body with endorphins, because they too can lead to depression when levels are low. And finally, be careful what you are saying to yourself because your body is always listening.

TIPS TO HELP MOMS’ LOW BACK PAIN Hello everyone. Dr Brad Ivanchuk here. Last time we talked about lower back pain in kids. But what about all you hard-working and over-stressed moms out there? I really feel for you all. It is a challenging time for many of us. Did you know that females tend to hold a lot of their stress in the lower lumbar area? Mental / emotional stress, kid stress, relationship stress, not to mention the physical stress from all the hard work that you do. T...his can often times lead to chronic lower back ache. If this sounds like you, I have a few helpful tips for you today. First of all, should you apply ice or heat on an achy back? Wherever you feel achy and sore, there is always a degree of underlying inflammation. If you apply heat directly over a sore spot, this will ESCALATE the underlying inflammation and make the problem even WORSE. Cold packs, therefore, are the best thing to do. Apply 10 to 15 minutes over the sore area every couple of hours. Cold has ANTI-INFLAMMATORY properties. There is nothing wrong, however, with a warm salt bath as long as you apply a cold compress before and afterwards. Stretching your back is also another thing you can do but you have to know which stretches you should do, and which stretches you shouldn’t do. This will be different for every person depending upon what the exact problem is. I will be able to help you with this. LOW BACK PAIN SOLUTIONS FOR KIDS Hello all. Dr Brad here again. Today we are going to talk about lower back pain in kids. This is a real issue of concern as four out of 10 kids complain of lower back pain while sitting (in class). If your kids do complain of back ache and stiffness, I have a couple of helpful tips for you today. One, is you can have them sit on an exercise ball or a posture disc while they are doing their homework/studies. Sitting on an exercise ball or postu...re disc will automatically engage their core muscles forcing them to sit up straight preventing them from collapsing into that dreaded C-posture. C-posture is hard an all parts of the spine including the lower back. Secondly, you could invest in a sit-stand capable desk. Our recommendation at the American Posture Institute is to stand for 40 minutes and sit for 20 minutes every hour they are doing their homework. If they are going to be sitting only, remind them to take their 60 second posture break every 30 minutes. And finally, remember that spinal alignments are hugely effective in helping people (of all ages) who suffer from lower back ache. KIDS POSTURE THE C GENERATION Hello everyone. Dr Brad here again. I am a Burlington, Ontario chiropractor at Life Chiropractic Centre on Guelph Line. I am also a Certified Posture Expert with the American Posture Institute. For the next while we are going to be talking about pediatrics and posture. ... Before we get into it we need to learn about the C Generation. The C-Generation are those kids born between 1995 and 2015. What we are seeing in this modern group of pediatric patients is that more and more of them have a C-shaped spinal curve (S-shaped is normal), which is prominent throughout their developmental years. This is not what nature intended. This is a primitive postural presentation seen normally in infants and geriatrics only. And one of the main causes of this is technology. Kids born between 1995 and 2015 have been using technology since a very early age. They had their Gameboys, X-boxes, play stations, they got their 1st cell phones (games and texting), and there was a literal explosion of computer use in the home and at school. This was the first generation of kids that have been immersed in technology and it is the same group of kids that we are collecting our data from. If you have ever had to tell your kids to sit up straight you have already detected a problem. Remember to use all handheld devices at eye level. If your kids use an ipad frequently, consider investing in a stand. Secondly, make it a rule that for the first hour every morning, your kids do not engage with any technology. Let them get through their morning routine without any interruptions. And let their right brains flourish for an hour or so. This is the creative and artistic side of the brain. Many of us typically do not spend enough time in right brain mode. As soon as we interact with technology, we flip into left brain mode (thinking/analytical) and stay there for the rest of the day. This needs to be better balanced. Another thing you can do is make an agreement that there are no devices at the dinner table. Take the opportunity for some real human interaction and communication with other family members. And finally, no technology at least 1 hour before bed-time. The blue light that is emitted from TV screens, computer screens, ipad screens, cell phone screens etc. hyper-stimulates your brain tissue. This will not allow you to fall into the deep part of your sleep rhythms. In fact, no wifi in the bedroom is a very healthy idea. Benefits from doing one, some or all of these? Today I have a very valuable bit of information for you especially if you suffer from back pain. A 2004 research study (Apkarian,2004) demonstrated that patients with chronic lower back pain show 10 to 20 times more loss of gray matter (brain tissue) on MRI studies compared to a control group.... In other words, chronic lower back pain results in premature brain aging. Your gray matter contains most of your brains neurons (nerve cells) and is responsible for things such as muscle control, seeing, hearing, speech, emotions and memory. This study clearly demonstrated a direct link between spinal function and central nerve system function and revealed another huge benefit of maintaining a healthy and properly aligned posture system. BAD POSTURE AND YOUR DIGESTION Hello everyone. Dr Brad Ivanchuk here. I am a Burlington, Ontario chiropractor at Life Chiropractic Centre on Guelph Line. Today we are going to learn why it is important to assess your structure/spinal alignment/posture when things do not seem to be going right on the inside.... Lets take posture quadrant #3 for example your 5 lower lumbar vertebrae and your pelvis. This is your main stability quadrant both externally and internally. Internally, it stabilizes 3 things; your digestion, elimination and reproduction. The most common posture distortion here is pelvic tilt or pelvic un-leveling. This is easy to check. Stand in front of a mirror and rest your hands on your hips and compare one side to the other. A misaligned pelvis means a misaligned digestive tract too. When the digestive tract is misaligned, food cannot pass through comfortably and fluidly. This will lead to cramping, indigestion, constipation ad even hemorrhoids. Females may notice menstrual cramps, difficulties conceiving, and challenges during pregnancy and childbirth. A misaligned pelvis will also cause weakness of the pelvic floor making it difficult for one to control the release of urine. This can affect kids, adults, males and females both. So when things dont seem to be going right on the inside, the logical place to start is to assess your posture system. BENEFITS OF CORRECTING HUMP BACK Hello everyone. Dr Brad Ivanchuk here. I am a Burlington, Ontario chiropractor at Life Chiropractic Centre on Guelph Line. Today we are going to talk about thoracic hyper kyphosis or hump back. There are 4 important things that you need to know about this condition.... First of all, it is the most common posture distortion found in the second posture quadrant. Secondly, at least 40% of elderly people present with this posture distortion. Third, patients with hump back are 3 times more likely to end up in a nursing home. And finally, a study in 2004 concluded that the most severe consequence of hump-back is early mortality and higher mortality rates due to atherosclerosis or heart disease. In other words, this condition increases your risk of dying from a heart attack. I am sure you can see the benefits of maintaining good alignment in this part of your spine. But, lets think about this also . we know that forward head posture or tech neck will eventually cause hump back if left undetected and uncorrected. We also know that kids are interacting with technology at a much earlier age and that at least 34% of school-aged kids already present with some degree of tech neck. SCOLIOSIS SCREENING FOR PARENTS Hello everyone. Dr Brad Ivanchuk here. I am a Burlington, Ontario chiropractor at Life Chiropractic Centre on Guelph Line. Today we are going to talk about scoliosis because I have seen a couple of (teenaged) cases lately that did not have to get as bad as they did if there were early intervention.... I am going to give you five signs to look for so you can check your kids right at home. Scoliosis is an abnormal spinal curve (usually an S-shaped curve) and the most common type will affect kids usually between 10 and 18 years of age, females more so than males. So have your child stand in front of you (bare feet, underwear and arms at their side) and observe them from behind. Look to see if 1) shoulders are uneven, 2) one arm looks longer than the other (compare finger tips side to side), 3) hips are uneven, 4) the upper body tends to lean to one side, and 5) rib cage humps when they bend over to touch their toes. Now, if even one of these signs are positive or present, then a more detailed investigation is required. And this is where I can help you. POOR POSTURE LEADS TO POOR BALANCE Hello all. Dr Brad here again and today we are going to talk about balance and coordination. If you feel that you are clumsy and you stumble and trip frequently, even falling on occasion, this can often times result from spinal misalignments and posture distortions in the neck and upper back (PQ 1 and 2), and even in your lower back (PQ 3).... Posture distortions here can result in decreased postural control, increased postural sway, less stability against gravity, sensory-motor disturbances (your brain and body are coordinating properly), balance issues and thus an increased risk of falling. This can happen in any age group, but is of a greater concern with people in their 70s, 80s and 90s. Common fractures from falling are the wrist, hip, lower leg and ankle and these can often be a complicated fracture which take longer to heal. Last time we talked about mental/emotional stress and some of the more common physical symptoms resulting from mental/emotional stress are headaches, neck/shoulder pain and low back... pain. Let me explain how this works because some people dont understand this connection between mind and body. When you are stressed mentally/emotionally your muscles get tense and tight. We have all experienced this along with those nasty knots that can form in your muscle tissue. When this happens in the larger muscles that attach to your spine, they will tug on your vertebrae and eventually create spinal misalignments, posture distortions, irritated spinal joints and irritated spinal nerve roots. When this happens in the upper part of your spine (Posture Quadrant [PQ] 1 and PQ 2), this will cause the headaches, neck and shoulder pain, and when it happens in your lower spine (PQ 3), this will cause lower back aches. HOW TO DEAL WITH MENTAL STRESS Hello all. Dr Brad Ivanchuk here and today we are going to talk about stress. Not physical stress, not chemical stress but mental/emotional stress. So, today I am giving you 5 tips on what you can do to manage and better deal with mental/emotional stress: 1- Guard the gates of your mind carefully. You can choose which thoughts you wish to entertain. Watching the news can be very disheartening which is not healthy for your mindset or your psychology. Limit how much news you watch and keep yourself busy with pleasurable things to occupy your mind. 2- Meditate daily. And if you are not well practised at meditation, put your headphones on and plug into your computer for 30 min. You can find lots of meditation on the internet soft music, positive affirmations, sounds of nature etc. Whatever resonates with you. 3- Exercise. Get out there for your power walks or do your yoga. You can find a lot of yoga instructors on the internet. Both of these are excellent de-stressors and will release endorphins into your body which will elevate your mood. 4- Be diligent with your food choices. When we are stressed we are more likely to reach for those comfort foods; sweets, chips, soft-drinks etc. These will mess with your blood sugars, they are addictive and result in mood swings. (Do your kids ask for junk food when they are cranky?) 5- And most importantly (in my humble opinion and to my knowledge there are no qualifying double-blind studies, just my clinical observations after 30+ years of hands-on practice), your chiropractic adjustments. Adjustments have a soothing and calming effect on your central nerve system. After an adjustment, people report less pain, they can breathe easier, they feel all that tension melt away and a release of endorphins which will counteract those nasty stress hormones cortisol and adrenalin. BREATHE EASIER WITH GOOD POSTURE Hello all. Dr Brad here again from Life Chiropractic Centre. Last time we talked about posture quadrant number 1 (the head and neck) and how forward head posture or tech neck is the most common posture distortion here.... The thing about posture distortions is that if they are left uncorrected, they will have a chain reaction and cause posture distortions throughout the rest of the spine. For example, if forward head posture is not corrected, it will eventually cause a posture distortion in the second posture quadrant (thoracic spine) called hump back. Not only is hump back one of the most unsightly posture distortions, but in combination with forward head posture it can decrease your lung capacity by up to 30%. Try for yourself. Take in a deep breath with your head, neck and upper back bent forward. Compare when standing with upright, open, healthy posture. This particular posture distortion robs you of vital oxygen! If you are prone to lung problems such as emphysema, bronchitis, asthma, frequent chest colds or even allergies, it is critical that you maintain a healthy posture system so that you can breathe properly. HELP FOR JAW DISLOCATION Hello all. Dr Brad here again. Today we are going to have a quick review of the first Posture Quadrant the head and neck. The most common posture distortion pattern here is forward head posture or tech neck.... The most common symptoms associated with tech neck pain and stiffness in the neck, tingling in the arms and hands, frozen shoulder syndrome, headaches and TMJ syndrome. What exactly is TMJ syndrome? TMJ syndrome (issues with your jaw joint) is characterized by clicking or popping in your jaw joint(s) when you chew, pain in your jaw, headaches (usually quite severe), your top teeth do not line up over your bottom teeth properly and jaw dislocation. In fact, I treated a young teenaged girl just the other day who had dislocated here entire jaw (both sides). She like thousands of other students has been spending a lot more time sitting at her computer doing her home studies. Her posture began to slump, this resulted in tech neck which put a lot of stress on her jaw joint. When she yawned the other morning upon awakening, her jaw popped and got stuck in the extreme wide-open position. She could not talk, drink, eat, swallow and was in a great deal of pain. It took 3 attempts and a lot of sweat and tears but I finally reduced the dislocation and re-set her jaw so she could open and close it properly. Here is your take-away if you are sitting at your computer more than you usually do, remember to do 2 things; sit heathly and take your posture break every 30 minutes. Hope youre all staying healthy. Remember this when you sit you burn one third of the calories that you would when you are standing. Sitting for extended periods will lead to obesity especially around the waist line. GET MORE OUT OF YOUR WALKING Hello all. Dr Brad Ivanchuk here. I am a Burlington, Ontario chiropractor at Life Chiropractic Centre on Guelph Line. I am also a Certified Posture Expert with the American Posture Institute and a canfitpro certified Personal Training Specialist.... I have been doing a lot more walking lately because the gyms are closed and just to get out of the house, and here are a few tips I can share with you so that you get more fitness out of your walks. First of all, I noticed I was getting achiness in my back and knees from pounding the pavement, so I started walking on the grass (between the road and the sidewalk) as much as I could. My back and knees were very grateful. But you need to keep your eyes open for piles of puppy presents. Sad but true. Disgusting !! When you are out for your walks, try and maintain a good moderate pace. I like 120 steps per minute. The other thing too, is to engage your core and your butt more. Pull that bellybutton in towards your spine and squeeze those butt cheeks together (pretend you are holding a loonie between your cheeks) while you are walking. You can even put your hands on your hips and get a little salsa swing going if you like. People may think you are nuts but why not get the most out of the time you spend on your physical fitness. Remember that when you increase your pace, you can decrease your time. An effective, healthy walk can be done in 30 min. Keep healthy everyone. Hello all. I thought I would share with you guys other things I am doing to stay healthy. Viruses typically dont like hot drinks.... So whether your fave is green tea or coffee or hot water with a squeeze of lemon juice, try adding this to the mix 5 drops of vitamin D3 (good for the immune system), 2 drops of oregano oil (viruses, parasites, bacteria etc. do not like oregano oil) and a squirt of honey to temper the oregano oil. Also 3000 mg of vitamin C per day. 1000 mg with breakfast, lunch and dinner. Always good for your immune system. And 200 mcg of Selenium per day. Selenium makes your tissue cells more resistant to the little spikes on any virus. The spikes are what attach to your tissue cells. Stay healthy everybody. SITTING DISEASE Hello all. Dr Brad Ivanchuk here. I am a Burlington, Ontario chiropractor at Life Chiropractic Centre on Guelph Line. This an appropriate time to review sitting disease since most everybody is much more sedentary and sitting way more than they normally would these past few weeks. When you sit you burn only one third of the calories that you would when you are standing. (This is why I am a huge advocate of sit-stand capable desks.) Extended periods of sitting can lead to obesity, increased blood pressure, high blood sugar, excess body fat around the waist, abnormal cholesterol levels, heart disease and even cancer. In other words "sitting disease". If you sit more than 8 hours per day, you are at a much higher risk. But if you exercise 60 75 minutes per day (moderate intensity), you can counteract the effects of too much sitting. So, get out there for your walks and make sure to take your posture breaks every 30 min if you have to do a lot of sitting.
