As we head into the long weekend, make sure you are taking proper precautions before going out on the water. Every year, drownings occur while people are engaged in aquatic activities where people intended on being in the water, but something went wrong. In the last 2 weeks, there have been 5 drownings in B.C. all young adults between the age of 20 and 32 who had been swimming and unexpectedly drowned. A drowning can occur in as little as 10-30 seconds. Having an aid wi...th you can save a life. Often, our first instinct is to jump in when we see someone drowning, but that should be a last resort. Pool noodles, paddles, rope, and lifejackets can be used similarly to lifeguard rescue tubes, and either help pull someone to safety, or keep them afloat until help arrives. Drowning is Preventable. Plan ahead and stay safe this weekend!
