Do you need more swim instructors and pool lifeguards on staff? One solution is to program more Bronze Cross courses! On average, for every 5 registered Bronze Cross candidates, you get 1 certified swim instructor. And for every 2 registered Bronze Cross candidates, you get 1 certified pool lifeguard. Once your facility reopens, consider broadening your base with more Bronze Cross courses. Electrical appliances like hair dryers are dangerous items to keep around the tub since they can deliver a potentially fatal shock if they fall into water while plugged in. Unplug such devices when not in use and store them away from the tub. Did you know that bathtubs account for 16% of all drownings in Ontario? Children and seniors are most affected. Make sure children are always supervised in the bathtub and use adhesive traction stickers and grab bars to help prevent falls. Bathtubs are a high-risk setting for falls. - Use a non-slip mat/surface and a spout cover. - Help children get in and out of the tub. - Install weight-bearing grab bars for seniors. ... - Ideally, seniors should have someone close enough to hear them and respond if there is a problem. Drowning can happen in seconds and it happens silently no splashing, no noise. Never leave your child alone in the tub; stay with them and always be within arms’ reach. In 2019 @PPLgroup earned the Society’s Darnell Challenge Cup (Overall) for the 12th year in a row, raising $30,000 to support Water Smart and drowning prevention. We presented the trophy to PPL Vice President Tim Bown at our offices last week. During his visit, Tim also delivered us a second cheque for $30,000, which represents PPL’s 2020 fundraising efforts on behalf of the Society. Incredible! Fact: Your body loses heat 25x faster in water than in air. Understanding the 1-10-1 principle and the factors for staying alive in cold water is critical. 1 minute - sudden cold shock response followed by hyperventilation. minutes - until cold incapacitation and loss of effective use of your fingers, arms and legs. 1 hour - before you lose consciousness due to hypothermia.... November is here, but that doesn’t mean your boating adventures are done for the year! There’s still time to enjoy the water even as temperatures start to cool. Keep these tips in mind: 1. Dress for the water temperature: wear thermal protection (and a PFD, of course), and keep spare clothing on board. 2. Keep checking the weather: the mixing of warm and cold air can spawn late summer high winds and waves.... 3. Watch for hazards: water levels may have fluctuated from normal summer levels, meaning previously visible hazards could now be submerged. By exercising caution and being self-sufficient on the water, you can enjoy boating well into the fall.
