There is a rare, little known adaptogen that is both weird and wonderful called cordyceps. Adaptogens are starting to be more discussed, as their main benefit is to deal with stress. Scientists have discovered that stress is the leading cause of all diseases, both physical and mental. Stress causes very real changes in the physical body, including damaging the neurological endocrine and immune system. Adaptogens work primarily on the hypothalamic, pituitary and adrenal glan...ds. They are non-specific, in that they go to work in whatever area they are needed. So what makes cordyceps weird? Well cordyceps is produced when fungus spores, settle on certain caterpillars of a moth species and enter their bodies. The caterpillar then buries itself in the ground before it dies. In the summer, the fungus emerges from each caterpillars head, growing what looks like thin orange fingers above the soil. As it reaches maturity, it consumes about 90% of the caterpillar. leaving the caterpillar mummified. Cordyceps is found in areas like the Himalayas and Tibetan plateau, over 14,000 feet above sea level. What makes cordyceps wonderful? Cordyceps has been used in ancient medicine since the 15th century, but with the rise of the pharmaceutical industry, we have lost touch with the ancients wisdom. Thankfully scientists are now beginning to combine this ancient wisdom with modern science. In fact modern day scientific studies have proven that cordyceps helps with a whole range of health issues. For example: lowers blood sugar levels supports heart health supports kidney health boosts the immune system maintains the libido combats fatigue improves quality of sleep anti-aging properties shrinks tumors fights cancer lowers inflammation relieves stress works as an anti-depressant helps enhance cognitive function and memory protects the mitochondria It works at the deepest cellular level to bring about homeostasis, the balancing of the body.
