Winter is coming Are your eyes prepared for the cold? Here are five helpful tips for how you can be ready for #snowszn 1. Use a Bruder mask! This helps with tear secretion for common dry eyes. By adding a Bruder mask for about five minutes per eye, you can help your eyes create the moisture they need. This tip also helps soothe scratchy, irritated and swollen eyes. If you're looking for a Bruder mask, don't worry! We sell them at our clinic!... 2. Add a humidifier to your home. This will help combat the dry indoor air that invades your home when you turn up the thermostat. When the air is too dry, your sinuses don’t function properly and this can cause congestion, sinusitis and irritated eyes. Be sure to run your humidifier during the night, when you’re eyes are most vulnerable to dry conditions. 3. Wear sunglasses outside to protect your eyes from UV light as well as the drying effects of our harsh winter winds! If you're going to the slopes on a sunny day, make sure your ski goggles keep your eyes protected from UV light as well. 4. Drink more fluids... which should sound like a common good health practice, but staying hydrated is actually one of the best things you can do to help your body fend off dry eyes. Water and other beneficial liquids are essential in rehydrating your eyes, so consider increasing your intake of liquids during winter months to prevent dehydration. 5. Consider adding more fish to your diet. Omega-3 based essential fatty acids are helpful in retaining moisture in your eyes. For our vegetarian friends, many local health food stores carry plant-based omega-3 supplements! Have a good weekend, everyone!

In Alberta, 25 per cent of children begin grade one with an undiagnosed vision or eye health problem. Vision problems can interfere with a child’s ability to learn during their first critical years in school. For the first 12 years of a child’s life, 80 per cent of learning is visual. Good grades go hand in hand with good vision! Call us today to schedule a comprehensive eye exam for your child! : 780-462-7500... #yeg#edmontonoptometrist#yeghealth#edmontonbusiness#edmontonoptometry#optometry#yeglocal#yegdt#edmontonliving#yegoptometry#yegoptical#yegmoms#shoplocalyeg#edmonton#yegmoms#yegkids#yegparents#yegfamily#yeghealth#millwoods#localloveyeg#yegsmallbusiness#yegfamily #lifetimeeyecare

Did you know that 80 per cent of learning depends on vision? A school-aged child's eyes are constantly in use in the classroom. For school-age children, several visual skills must work together so they can see and understand clearly, including: 1. Clear vision (at a distance and up close)... 2. The ability to maintain focus accurately at a distance 3. Focusing flexibility, allowing for distance changes 4. Binocular vision skills (eye position, movement, etc.) 5. Peripheral vision and eye-hand coordination If any of these skills are impaired or lacking, your child will need to work harder and thus may develop headaches or fatigue. Don't wait for the symptoms to get worse. If you notice any vision issues with your child, or if he or she is struggling with headaches or fatigue, contact us today. The eyes are a complex and vital component to a child's development, learning and growth. Things like eye muscle misalignments and unequal prescriptions between the two eyes, and much more can be missed during a routine vision screening. More importantly, a child doesn't understand the concept of what "blurry" vision is. If they've never experienced anything other than blurred vision before; they think everyone sees the same as they do. It is recommended to have your child's ...eyes examined at six months, one year, three years, then yearly starting at kindergarten. Protecting your eyes from UV radiation is just as important as putting on sunscreen to protect your skin. Many age-related eye diseases may be partially caused by UV exposure throughout your lifetime. Infants and young children are especially vulnerable to UV radiation. Your optometrist can make personalized recommendations to ensure your eyes are well-protected from the harmful effects of UV radiation. Some examples include UV-blocking coatings for your lenses, tinted glasse...s, photochromic lenses, clip-on sunglasses, or contact lenses with UV protection. As summer winds down, it's important that we remember to look after our eyes and keep them safe out in the sun. Oh, and for some tips on how to properly pull off wearing sunglasses with face masks, check out GQ's article https://www.gq.com/story/how-to-wear-a-mask-with-glasses #edmonton #optometrist

Did you know that 80% of learning comes through vision? Vision is a technique that involves being able to take visual information, process it, and then obtain meaning from it. When a child has a vision issue, it affects the way the brain interprets the information being gathered by the eyes. Although the eyes may be able to focus, the information they are transferring to the brain may get reversed, doubled, or jumbled in some other way. If your child is in need of a vision checkup, call us today to talk and ask us about our services!
