Today is National Day of Mourning Christine Mandegarian was a personal support worker employed at Altamont Care Community. She lived in Markham, Ontario. She was a mother of two. She loved her job. For over 30 years she worked to improve the lives of the Canadians trusted to her care. And on April 15, 2020 she lost her life. As the COVID-19 pandemic upends our lives and threatens our friends and family, front-line workers are putting themselves at risk every day just by going... to work. Christine Mandegarian was one of those workers. Each year hundreds of Canadian workers lose their lives because of preventable workplace injuries and illnesses. Since 1991, people across Canada have observed National Day of Mourning to remember and honour those Canadians. That’s why on April 28th you will see the Canadian flag flown at half-mast across our country.

For the last three weeks, we have been facing an unprecedented emergency in our communities as the onset and spread of COVID-19 arrived. With many canceled events, altered work schedules, and closed businesses and schools, the coming weeks and months are uncertain. Our community is feeling the stress of the unknown, and it brings challenges for each of us in different ways. Yet, as I see it, beyond our commitment to stay home and practice social distancing, we only have one choice to ensure we rise again on the other side, and that is for us to act as a community that turns stress into action, fear into empathy, and isolation into partnership.

While hundreds of thousands of us will heed the province's order to stay home during coronavirus, there will be tens of thousands of people who will head to work to keep everyone safe, sheltered and fed. We want to thank ALL essential workers, including: grocery store workers, truck drivers, custodians, utility technicians, school teachers and staff, child nutrition workers, first responders, health care workers, restaurant staff and anyone else who is working during this difficult time. Thank You

Many organizations are focused on achieving goals no matter what the cost to employees. If we treat people only as the means to an end, we will never have their loyalty. Treat your people right. Great leaders are concerned about getting the job done as well as the well-being of those under their care. It doesn’t mean being overly attentive or soft but demonstrate that you value people. Without empathy, you can’t build a team, inspire followers or elicit loyalty. Leaders that possess this trait always make time for people. Nobody cares how much you know, until they know how much you care
