What does it mean for the church in a secular age to lead from the margins? Reading Debra Meyerson’s and Maureen Scully’s paper Tempered Radicalism and the Politics of Ambivalence and Change (available as a free PDF on the Internet) made me think about how can the church lead and influence not from a position of power, but from the position of the minority voice or even that of limited influence. While the paper deals with organizations, I believe what the authors say has a... direct impact on what it means to develop leaders for the church in a secular society. What does it mean to effect change when you do not have power and influence? Meyerson and Scully may challenge the church to live hopefully and generously, even from the margins. They encourage me that we can be a minority presence that does make a difference in the end, if we cultivate the virtue of patience.
